Safeguarding Level 2

Following on from several communications from members, ABDO would like to clarify the position on safeguarding requirements. Following the release of the latest version of the Intercollegiate Document, there is a recommendation for dispensing opticians to complete level 2 training.

The priority in the early part of 2015 for ABDO is to get something set up for dispensing opticians. One of the main issues ABDO face is the issue of funding to complete this. Many members will recognise that optometrists are entitled to access level 2 training via DOCET, however it has been made clear that dispensing opticians cannot access the same facility.

Whilst there are plenty of online training modules which can be accessed for a fee, this is not ideal. Be assured ABDO are working on this and will offer more information as soon as we have it.

New BSI standard for sunglasses

Plano sunglasses and clip-ons are subject to a new BSI standard from 1 March 2015, in a move to globalise regulations.

BS EN ISO 12312-1 was introduced last year with the understanding that the previous standard EN 1836 could run concurrently for another twelve months, with this transition period expiring at the end of February.

BSI standards are available at a reduced rate for ABDO members via the ABDO College Bookshop – email: bookshop@abdocollege.org.uk.

GOC holds first illegal practice stakeholder group meeting

The General Optical Council has held its first stakeholder steering group meeting as part of its new illegal practice strategy.

The group has been formed to develop a code of practice for online contact lens suppliers and advise on options for implementation. The GOC intends to launch a consultation on a draft code of practice in June 2015 and to implement the code by the end of the year.

The group will also work to raise awareness among the public of how to buy and wear contact lenses safely, such as the need to follow aftercare advice and have regular check-ups.

GOC publishes Call for Evidence findings

The General Optical Council (GOC) has published its findings from the Call for Evidence as part of its strategic standards review.

The consultation found that all respondents believed scopes of practice for optometrists and dispensing opticians would develop in the future, with a greater role in primary care provision owing to the expected ageing population and growing strains upon the NHS.
