Social Media Engagement: Going Beyond Likes and Followers

So often working in social media I hear things like "how will this get me more Facebook likes’" or "this is going to get me more followers on Twitter." Listen, the number of likes for a Facebook page or followers for a Twitter account can be useful, but social media engagement is so much more. These numbers alone are not the holy grail of metrics in determining if you are doing well on social media.

When it comes to likes and followers, more is not necessarily better. 2,000 likes or followers that aren’t engaged with your Facebook page or Twitter account aren’t helping you at all. In fact, in regards to Facebook those extraneous followers may actually be hurting you. This is why buying bulk likes on Facebook and followers on Twitter is a bad idea. Instead of focusing on likes or followers, the metrics you should be concerned with are the ones that show social media engagement.

Do: Be more than a business brand

The strongest real estate agents on social media are more than just their services. They are charming and engaging people through their profiles. Social media is a powerful channel to demonstrate support for things that people care about. At the end of the day, buyers and sellers are your company’s peers. They are the momentum behind your business. So show support for what they care about.

It's good practice to stop trying to sell services and focus on other things your audience cares about and enjoys. Maybe it’s the local sports team or a charity you really endorse. Adding a little variety to your content mix, and taking a break from the promotion, helps to connect with clients in more emotional ways.

You can also consider uploading images, videos, audio, documents and presentation files to your social media profiles to further showcase examples of your expertise and professionalism.

LinkedIn Tip: Acquire Recommendations

Ask two or three people you've successfully done business with to write a positive, compelling recommendation for you. Even friends or former classmates can be used as recommendations in a pinch.

Let them know you are seeking their honest testimonials to qualify and lend value to the claims you make on LinkedIn about your career experience, skill sets and specialties.
