April showers brings DANCING IN THE RAIN!

...and a new website! We launched the new design of our Sugar Swing website - check it out here!  As well, March was packed full of great dance events, including live bands, student nights, new classes, and workshops, workshops, workshops, oh my! April is sure to bring a great month of dancing, hopefully a little more relaxed, but still throwing our weekly ring-a-ding-ding wingdings (1930s slang for a good-time party)!

Thank You's

Thank you to our community for representing us so well at all the events in Western Canada in March!

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Community Appreciation Pizza Party on March 15! It was great to see familiar faces and meet some new people, as well as cut a rug chowing down on some pizza pie. Thanks for the suggestions, which can still be left on the table beside the front doors.

Enough cannot be said to all of you who volunteer for our weekly dances and our volunteer leads or follows!

A shout out to our March dance volunteers: Jamie, Travis, Ryan, Lindsey, Derek, Kathleen, Tawnie, Michael, Steven, Victoria, Jessica, Peter, Azadeh, Amber, Tara, Coleen, and others that I missed!

Balboa and Bal-Swing

Here at Sugar Swing we are interested in offering you great instruction, fun dances, and good music. We aim to create a friendly learning environment and accessible dances. But, we are also invested in the history of swing; thus, we bring you BALBOA.

A little bit about Balboa:

Originally a closed position dance strictly called Balboa, it later developed to include fancy swing moves and became Bal-Swing or California Swing.

The "Balboa" got its name from the Balboa Peninsula at Newport Beach, near Los Angeles in California. The dance was first done at the beach Pavilion and then latterly at the famous Rendezvous Ballroom. The dance developed in the late 1920's. By the early 1930's it had become sufficiently well known to be given its name. People from the LA area who'd seen it started referring to it as 'The Balboa' or the dance being done in Balboa. The dance spread up the coast through the beach resorts of Huntington, Long Beach, San Pedro, Redondo Beach, Venice Beach, and finally into the greater LA basin area.
More info can be found at The Lindy Circle.

Balboa is a fine mixture of dances, and should definitely be explored by any lindy hopper who loves to dance! It is sometimes challenging; completion of our Jitterbug series is suggested, or previous balboa experience. Julie Kiraly and Birkley Wisniewski, our trusty master teachers here, have been attending many Balboa workshops in anticipation to bring this dance form to Edmonton. Continually broadening their knowledge, they are great teachers who offer a lot in terms of integrity and clarity.

Here's what we are offering in the near future. Help us make Balboa a bigger thing in Edmonton!

Bal-Swing classes start Tuesday, April 8  or May 13 @ 6pm

Balboa Formal dance - Friday, April 11 @ 8pm, with lesson
