Over 100 events will be taking place in First Nations communities this June 21 as part of the FNHA Day of Wellness Events! FNHA would like the June 21 Day of Wellness events to become an annual wellness movement for First Nations peoples in BC. Pamela Wilson, a member of Heiltsuk Nation (Bella Bella), never expected to become a coroner. Self-described as squeamish, she was nonetheless drawn to the profession later in life by her strong belief that coroners working in community require a greater cultural understanding and humility - areas that she could advocate for and bring to her own practice.

When asked why she thinks it's important for First Nations people to become coroners, she notes, "A First Nations coroner has a cultural understanding, which helps to mitigate disrespect and misunderstanding - being humble and respecting peoples' processes. First Nations are much older than Canada - these practices and ways of life have always been." ​

FNHA Environmental Public Health Services works to identify and prevent environmental public health risks in First Nations communities that could impact the health of community members. Where public health risks are identified, recommendations are provided to reduce these risks.

Through community training, education and awareness, community capacity is increased to achieve a healthy and safe environment. The FNHA would like to share our Environmental Public Health Services compendium for First Nations communities.

Following the Together in Wellness 2014-15 Tripartite Committee on First Nations Health Annual Report, this summary poster describes a number of innovative integrated care projects across the province.

The year has involved the refocusing of strategic efforts to prioritize community-centred care, multidisciplinary teams, and a shift to more regionalized service delivery and investment models.

Thank you to all nurses and their support staff working with First Nations in BC on their wellness journeys! 

Health Benefits dental therapist Kim Trottier, sits knee to knee with a worried Mom. At just 2-years-old, today's patient is too small for the dentist's chair. Instead, Kim and Mom hold him between them on their laps as Kim takes a look at his teeth.

Although most cases like this one are referred out of the community, as a certified dental therapist, Kim had the skills to treat the child in community that very day. As Mom kept the toddler calm and comforted, Kim got to work.

Do you want to be on the radio? FNHA is making a podcast and radio program about tobacco and Indigenous communities, and we’re looking for youth and communities to share their stories.

In one of our episodes, we’d like to meet youth who smoke. This is not an anti-smoking PSA - it's an opportunity for you to share you stories. Or maybe you don’t smoke, but you’ve got a lot to say about tobacco. We want to hear from you!

In another episode, we want to feature a community that has taken strides towards protecting the community from the harmful effects of commercial tobacco. We know there are amazing BC First Nations communities doing amazing things with innovative or groundbreaking tobacco reduction programs or policies to brag about. Now is your chance to brag!

On May 12, the Lhtako Dene, Lhoosk'uz Dene, Nazko, Ulkatcho and  ?Esdilagh First Nations came together with others from the Quesnel area to have an All-Nations Sobriety Celebration. The event was very important to our people to come together as one to celebrate sobriety. Bringing together all Nations to tell their stories was very powerful to all who attended.

Sport and physical activity are more than just ways to extend a healthy life. Physical activity can be a way to reconnect with ourselves, our communities, and our surroundings. Team sports and group activities reinforce the ties that bind us to each other, help us form life-long friendships, foster a sense of belonging in participants, and help develop and nurture important life-skills.

Over February and March, First Nations communities gathered in each of the five regions to talk data governance, discussing how data and information can support decision-making in Nation rebuilding and community development.

To follow up on the conversations started, a series of two-hour webinars are being hosted by FNHA, one per region. The webinars will report back on and confirm what was heard from communities at the Data Governance Engagement Sessions.

The Nenqayni Wellness Centre's Elders Wellness Program Moving Forward is hosting two summer sessions. Programs will include cultural activities (smudging, sweats), group workshops, recreation activities and nutrition (meals provided).

Those attending the first session will be able to participate in the 40th Annual Elders Gathering that is being held in Williams Lake this year July 11-14th.
