JULY, 2017 Edition No Images? Click here Progressive Care Unit beds have all the bells and whistlesIn 1971, Walt Disney released Bedknobs and Broomsticks, a musical fantasy film that featured a bed that could fly. The 28 new, high-tech beds delivered to Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center last week for the $10.9 million Progressive Care Unit may not be able to fly, but their capabilities border on magic. Manufactured by Stryker Medical, the "IBed," is designed to prevent patient falls and reduce the likelihood of patient skin issues. Sensors in the bed automatically alert staff if a patient lowers their bed rails or tries to get out their bed without assistance. The sensors also detect when a patient changes their position. The beds feature all-gel mattresses and an air pump system designed to remove moisture trapped between the patient and the mattress. Trapped moisture can lead to skin rashes and bed sores. In addition, gel mattresses are cooler than foam mattresses, aiding in patient comfort and dryness. TJ Hazar with Stryker Medical tests one of the 28 state-of-the-art patient beds recently delivered to Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center for the new Progressive Care Unit, scheduled to open to patients next month. All of the beds are also capable of sending patient weight and other information through a connection to the nursing station and to the patient’s electronic medical record. Banner Del E. Webb is the first Banner hospital to receive the IBeds, which cost about $12,000 each. As part of the efforts to raise funds for the new unit, Sun Health Foundation has launched a Buy a Bed campaign, with donation categories ranging from "single" to "king." One 'good book' leads to anotherA few years ago, Rev. Alrick Headley was reading a book about theology when he unexpectedly came across his own name. The author had quoted Alrick's master's thesis to make a point. Out of curiosity, Alrick did a Google search and was surprised to find that several academic libraries had his 2004 thesis, The Nature of the Will, in their collections A friend and fellow pastor told Alrick that maybe these were signs he should write his own book. "He got me thinking about it," the La Loma Village-based chaplain said. Those thoughts turned into action and last month, Wipf and Stock Publishers released The Nature of the Will in the Writings of Calvin and Arminius: A Comparative Study authored by Alrick George Headley. The book is available on Amazon. Alrick describes the book, which he dedicated to his wife and four children, as a "modification and updating" of his thesis. "It explores differences and similarities between the writings of influential theologians and Protestant Reformers John Calvin and James Arminius in relation to free will and the fourfold state of man." With the book's deep theological bent, Alrick knows it probably won't show up on the New York Times bestseller list, but that was never his intent. Author Rev. Alrick Headley with his book. The book's target audience is church leaders, pastors and lay people interested in weighty theological questions. "I'm trying to present something that's an entry point into the discussion of free will and free choice, which are enduring subjects of debate in Christianity," he said. With two master's degrees — one in Divinity from Mid-America Reformed Seminary and the other in Systematic Theology from the Calvin Theological Seminary - it's obvious he's grappled with many of life's big questions. While he was in school and in between, Alrick served in church leadership positions in Michigan, California, and Arkansas before moving to Arizona last fall to accept the chaplaincy position at La Loma. Could there another book in his future? He's mulling it over, but for now, he's focused on the "Good Book" and serving the spiritual needs of the residents and staff at La Loma Village. Circle of Care Award given to Care Transitions nurseKrysta Roseberry, BSN, RN, doesn't like to be fussed over at work. Seeing her Care Transitions' patients get better is reward enough for her. But sometimes patients and family want to publicly thank nurses and other health professionals who provide exceptional care. Sun Health Foundation's Circle of Care Award gives them a way to say "thanks," while making a donation to the Foundation in the "exceptional" employee's name. Krysta received a Circle of Care award last month in recognition of her work with a Care Transitions' patient — an older gentleman — and his daughter who lives out of state. The daughter donated $100 to Sun Health Foundation in Krysta's name. In an email, the daughter wrote: "I hope that all your employees are even half as dedicated, intelligent, thorough, (L) Sun Health President and CEO Ron Guziak and Care Transitions Director Deb Richards (far R) present Krysta Roseberry (center) with a Circle of Care Award. thoughtful and effective as Krysta. Had it not been for Krysta's detailed explanation and her follow-up...I think my father would not be alive today."
