It is an incredible honor to welcome visitors to view our beautiful school building. We have representative Student Ambassadors scheduled to lead tours for visitors and an interactive art activity on this day. We are also looking for parent volunteers to help represent our school (you are welcome to come with your children!). Please email jowen@urbandiscoveryacademy.com if you are interested in participating as a volunteer; we can use volunteers throughout the day from 9:00 am-4:00 pm. Professional DevelopmentThroughout this trimester, our teachers participated in a series of progressive math workshops with UCSD Department of Education Studies Professor Rusty Bresser. The workshops were specifically designed for UDA teachers to collaboratively strengthen the K through 8 continuum in mathematics. Teachers explored creative assessment strategies, collaborated to build common math rubrics, and developed new strategies to further engage students in math talk. Ms. Diana Becomes a Student!Ms. Diana participated in the #shadowastudentchallenge last week! She was a fourth grader in Ms. Dalesandro’s class for the day. She learned the box method in math and brushed up on her long division. She participated in peer editing and showed off her basketball skills during recess! Her fourth grade peers were so welcoming. Exhibition Night for K-4Kindergarten through 4th grade students will showcase their interdisciplinary project exhibitions on the evening of March 6, from 5-7pm, at UDA. Please join us in celebrating the powerful student learning that has been occurring this trimester. Reporting an Absence ReminderIf your child needs to remain at home due to illness, family emergency, funeral, legal matter, or religious holiday, UDA needs to receive notification from a parent/guardian by 9am on the day of in order to excuse the absence. In order to report the absence, you may either call the school (619-788-4668) and select option 2 to leave a voice message, or send an email to attendance@urbansd.com. UDA needs to receive either the voice message or email message directly from the parent/guardian for documentation. Similarly, tardies and early releases will only be be excused if they are a result of illness, family emergency, funeral, legal matter, or religious holiday. Partial absences due to medical appointments may be excused if a note from the medical office is provided. All other partial absences will be documented as unexcused. Please refer to pages 8-12 of the Student-Parent Handbook for more information on attendance. Visual ArtsInspired by human dance moves, 2nd grade students illustrated bee communication. They also learned about printmaking, and even created their own prints. Do these 8th grade faces look familiar? The students are working on self-portraits using pencil on paper. Fifth GradeLast week, the fifth graders learned about water movement through a "red hot" experiment involving vegetables, carnations, and red liquid. Pennies for PatientsStarting Monday, February 27, UDA is participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Pennies for Patients program, a service-learning program that gives students the unique experience of working together to help raise awareness and funds in honor of thousands of children and adults fighting against blood cancers. We are asking that everyone (students, staff, parents, etc.) at UDA join in this effort of raising awareness and collecting funds to benefit the mission of LLS, which is “to find cures for blood cancers and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.” Your child may leave the donation with his/her classroom teacher. Thank you for supporting LLS and UDA's participation in the Pennies program! Together, we can reach our goal of $1,000.
