From the Principal's desk - April 5, 2019

Dear Parents & Caregivers

I would like to invite you to join me for a VERY SPECIAL announcement following the Year 5 para-liturgy which begins at 9am on Thursday April 11. The announcement is very positive news for our entire school community and to celebrate the occasion we have two important activities planned.

Parents and Caregivers are invited to join us for a piece of celebration cake directly after the para-liturgy. At lunchtime, I will be hosting a school funded Sausage Sizzle for the children. For catering purposes could you please complete and return the “Sausage sizzle order form" which will be sent home shortly. We will be providing normal sausages, gluten free sausages and buns.

If your child has special dietary requirements that prevents them from eating cake, you are asked to please provide an alternative for them.

As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, the Year 6 students head off on what promises to be a very exciting camp to Albany on Monday April 8. I will be joining the campers for the first half of the trip and Mr Gaudoin will take over from me for the second half of the week. All campers will return to school by 3:30pm on Friday April 12.

I look forward to being able to share more details about this very significant milestone with you all on Thursday April 11 and in the final edition of eNews for Term 1.

Lenten reflection

hemIn this week’s Gospel, Jesus focuses on finding the good in others. The reading challenges all of us to take a positive approach to our daily life and to focus on others’ strengths rather than the things they do wrong.

It is human nature to see the negative in a situation and takes more effort and conscious thought to see the positives. Within your family you can help build resilience in your child by simply asking them to identify three good things they experienced that day. These simple conversations can help to build a positive view of the world and provide a sense of balance when things don’t to go plan. For the full reading click here.

Kindy Open Day a huge success

Yesterday we hosted an enthusiastic group of families looking for a Kindy place for their child in 2020. There was a fantastic buzz amongst the adults and children and it was a proud moment for all staff to be able to showcase our amazing school. Interest in our Kindy program has experienced tremendous growth with numbers significantly higher than the same time last year and there’s no doubt our cutest new members of the St Maria Goretti family certainly played their part.

If you know a family who haven't yet secured a Kindy place for 2020, please share our enrolment video (see link here) and encourage them to get it contact with us soon!

Looping and coding with Minecraft

The Minecraft program has taken on a whole different meaning this week for students in Year 5. Not just a fun game, the students have been investigating looping and coding within the Minecraft environment. Children used their knowledge of coding and loops to move their character throughout a series of mazes using an algorithm with the shortest amount of code to get to the end of the maze.
During numeracy, the class have begun measuring and drawing angles of various degrees. Making use of protractors to help them, they measured and drew a range of angles between zero and 180 degrees. The children the applied their understanding of angles to a particular letter of the alphabet and tried to work out the size of the different angles that were created by the letter’s shape. Some letters were definitely easier to measure than others!

Year 3G perfecting their powers of persuasion

This term the children in 3G have been learning how to improve their persuasive writing skills. Over the last couple of weeks the children have undertaken detailed planning to assist them ahead of their ‘Big Write’ session. Some of the really important decisions they had to make included everything from deciding on a topic, researching both points of views about the topic and then deciding which point of view they wanted to focus on.

The children have produced some incredible work which they typed up using Word. Some of the topics have included a piece on why ice hockey is a fantastic sport, while another focused on that age old dilemma of whether  dogs are better than cats! We’d love you to visit our classroom and see the results for yourself – can we persuade you?

Our P&F is searching for a Secretary

Our hardworking P&F are looking for a Secretary to join the Committee. The role only requires an hour or two per month of your time and can be a great way to get involved in the life and community of our school. We have a huge year ahead with planning for our major event – the Fete Open Day in November, already well underway. If you have a great community building idea you would like to suggest, why not send us an email.

If you would like to join us, but aren’t yet ready to commit to an ongoing role, why not pop in to our next committee meeting on Tuesday April 30 at 7pm and find out a bit more about what we do.

‘School Notices’ to be added to the website

As you are aware, we have recently reverted to our eNews format, focusing on the great things happening in classrooms. Other general school information that used to be in the newsletter, will now be moved to the website. We are currently building a new section simply called 'School Notices' on the website, which will house other operational information such as terms dates, logistical information about events etc. This new section and our updated calendar will be up and running at the start of next term.
