Click here Vol 26 No 06 09 Oct 2020 Form 1 ExcursionOn 5 October 2020 Form 1 pupils went on a tour to the Airfield Estate. We stayed in our class pods for the entire day because of Covid-19 restrictions but we did not have to wear a mask because we were outdoors throughout. Despite the rain we still had a lot of fun! There were many things to do such as orienteering and wellie-throwing: we threw boots into the bush and we had to dig them out. The sack and egg-and-spoon races were really popular. It was hilarious watching our classmates rolling down the hill. We made butter using tiny churns and after lunch we went hunting for insects. We caught and released a mini-frog: it was very cute. A highlight of the day was when we learned survival skills in the wood
and were tasked with making a teddy bear shelter out of leaves, twigs, and grass. When it was finished it had to pass a test to see if it was waterproof. Some shelters were more successful than others, and some teddies got very wet, but it was a really fun challenge. The best part of the day was spending time together without our masks. We are already looking forward to the next school outing with our friends. Ad Astra ScholarshipsCongratulations to past pupils Dylan Walsh (HSD, 2012-18) and Harry Lynch (HSD, 2014-20) who have both been awarded Ad Astra scholarships by University College Dublin for academic achievement and hockey, respectively. Dylan is a third year Electrical and Electronic Engineering student while Harry is beginning his first year at the UCD School of Engineering. We wish both former pupils every success in their future studies. Junior Certificate Home EconomicsForm 3 pupils have been busy putting the finishing touches to their Home Economics projects that form part of their Junior Certificate Classroom Based Assessment (CBA) tasks. This is a wonderful part of the course which gives pupils an opportunity to develop their creative abilities and talents in textiles and craft innovation. Well done to all involved. Form 4 Media StudiesForm 4 Media Studies pupils have been researching the work of artist Olafur Eliasson, whose rainbow-inspired art installations and architectural designs are renowned the world over. In turn, the pupils were given a challenge - to make an artificial HSD rainbow and to capture it on film. The pupils used mirrors, water spray, and sunlight to create some very striking photographs. Well done to all involved. Form 1 ArtPupils studying Art in Form 1 have come together to create this impressive wall poster of fellow pupils in an action pose. The image is comprised of over twenty-eight single illustrations in various styles and colours, and demonstrates the power of group work and collaboration. Form 4 First Aid CourseThe Physical Education Department is providing the opportunity for all pupils in Form 4 to participate in a recognised First Aid Course during the Autumn term. The course will be delivered during Form 4 Physical Education classes when possible, depending on the availability of course instructors. No additional payment is required as annual school fees cover the cost. The First Aid Course will be delivered in two 3-hour sessions. The course will provide pupils with the opportunity to learn and develop key life-saving skills. It is a certified First Aid Course, which includes Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training. The course is provided by an organisation known as First Aid for Everyone and each pupil will receive a certificate on completion of the course. The course is
