Click here Vol 23 No 31 018 May 2018 Mental Health Awareness Week - A Triumph! The High School encouraged pupils from Form 5 to organise a Mental Health Awareness Week for all members of the school community between 8-12 May. During the week pupils were encouraged to connect with new people, give more, keep learning new skills, take notice of the positive aspects of life as well as staying active. Each day we planned special activites based around one of the factors contributing to a positive outlook on life. Tea with Friends offered pupils a chance to get to know new people. Random Acts of Kindness showed how one small compliment can make someone’s day just a little bit better. People were given the opportunity to acknowledge the things they were grateful for. As a year group we worked well together and we feel that the week was a
huge success. Everyone enjoyed themselves while learning about the importance of positive mental health and we also learned how to deal with our emotions when times get tough. We are proud of the work we did and hope that it gave a positive view of the importance of mental health. Rainbow RunOn Saturday 12 May pupils and staff from The High School and Rathfarnham Parish National School (RPNS) gathered in the sunshine to participate in a 'Rainbow Run.' This colourful and fun event was in aid of St John's Ward at Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin. It was organised by past pupils of RPNS in Form 1 at HSD in memory of their friend Claire Tuite. We'd like to thank all pupils, teachers, parents, and especially the Form 4 band for their support. We were delighted to have raised €1,311 on the day for the hospital! Form 1 Geography Field TripLast week, Form 1 went on a Geography field trip to Causey Farm, Co Meath. We went to the farm on two buses (my friend and I really wanted to go on the double decker bus, but unfortunately all the seats were taken). When we arrived, we split into groups and mine headed straight for the farm tour. This included getting stuck in a cow pen, saying hello to a massive pig, and milking a friendly cow. Then we made some tasty bread and had our lunch. After that, we went to the bog in a jam-packed, open-backed tractor. No one could move a muscle! The bog jumping was hilarious and great fun. We all got stuck at least once! Afterwards, we changed into clean clothes, collected our homemade bread, and headed back to school. I had an
amazing time and I wish we could go again next year. Darkness Into LightLast weekend a group of pupils from The High School met at Marlay Park at 4.00 am for the Darkness into Light walk in support of Pieta House. We all received our yellow t-shirts and set off on our 5 km walk. When we were finished we enjoyed a delicious breakfast together. Science CompetitionCongratulations to the two High School Junior Science teams who competed in the Irish Science Teachers' Competition held in Belvedere College recently. Both were placed in the top 10 out of approximately 50 teams. Well done to all involved and the best of luck in all future competitions. Kerry TripLast week an enthusiastic group of pupils from For 4 journey to County Kerry to climb Carrauntoohil, the highest peak on the island of Ireland. The climb is part of The President's Award that pupils in Form 4 complete during Transition Year. Well done to all our pupils who completed this impressive climb. Golf FundraiserThanks to everyone who participated in The High School Golf Classic last weekend at Mount Juliet Estate, Thomastown, County Kilkenny. Pupils, partents and friends formed ten teams of four players each. The event was a fundraiser for the USA Hockey and Rugby tour taking place this summer. Car Wash FundraiserHockey and rugby players joined forces at the weekend to provide a car washing service at HSD to raise money for the forthcoming USA tour taking place this summer. The venture was a wonderful sucess. There will be another car wash and cake sale at HSD on Saturday 26 May between 10.00 am-1.00 pm. End-Of-Year DinnerMembers of the senior rugby squad gathered together for the end-of-year dinner last week in Terenure. Almost forty players were in attendance and a wonderful time was had by all.
