Law Council's EPOA Roundtable
On 15 July 2021, Dr Jacoba Brasch QC, President of the Law Council of Australia convened a national roundtable to discuss EPOA law reforms. There is significant interest in this area given that the Meeting of Attorneys-General is currently considering a national register for financial EPOAs. The Roundtable brought together national experts from the legal sector (including the Law Council’s Constituent Bodies), public advocates, older persons stakeholder groups, law reform and human rights representatives. Federal Family Violence Orders scheme doesn’t have all the answers
While the Law Council of Australia is pleased the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee’s report into the Family Law Amendment (Federal Family Violence Orders) Bill 2021 acknowledges some of the concerns voiced by the profession, the proposed scheme still fails to address what victims of family violence need – that is, the capacity to make immediate orders at the time protections are most needed. FIRB approval required to transfer real property to a foreign resident
Working with its specialist National Elder Law and Succession Law Committee, as well as the Foreign Investment Committee of the Business Law Section, and Constituent Bodies, the Law Council draws the attention of practitioners to certain significant changes to Australia’s foreign investment laws, commonly referred to as the ‘FIRB Regime’, which took effect on 1 January 2021 – in particular with respect to the impact of these changes on estate administration and will-making. Call for applications: John Koowarta Scholarship
The 2022 round for the John Koowarta Reconciliation Law Scholarship is still open. The scholarship is available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in an approved course of study that is a prerequisite to admission as a legal practitioner in any Australian jurisdiction at or through an Australian tertiary institution. Class Actions Forum 2021
On 15 July 2021, the Class Actions Committee from the Federal Litigation and Dispute Resolution Section of the Law Council of Australia and the Australian Academy of Law (AAL) hosted a virtual Class Actions Forum on the topic of 'Class Actions: Capital, Regulation and the Public Interest'. The Law Council of Australia is pleased to host an online webinar on the topic of ‘Frontline legal services in times of crisis'. The legal assistance sector has carried many Australians through times of extreme crisis, with recent years no exception – from bushfires to the COVID-19 pandemic. This webinar will explore the achievements of the sector in trying times, and examine the challenges it has come up against. Leaders in the sector Rowan McRae, Nassim Arrange and David Woodroffe will join with the Law Council’s President, Dr Jacoba Brasch QC, to identify improvements to be made so that the sector is better equipped to respond in future emergencies.
