JULY IMMUNISATION UPDATE

IMMUNISATION NEWS THIS JULY

  1. Zika virus update: Latest advice and resources for those travelling to countries (including travellers to the Olympics and Paralympics) reporting continuing mosquito-borne transmission of Zika virus.
  2. Travel medicine: Patients should be reminded to start seeing their GP at least six weeks before travel. Useful links regarding travel health are included here.
  3. Immunisation during pregnancy: Immunisation providers are encouraged to support the promotion of the pertussis and influenza vaccine during pregnancy and report any adverse events following immunisation.
  4. Influenza surveillance update: Influenza surveillance reports have been released and show an increase in influenza activity which may be indicative of the beginning of influenza season.
  5. Transmitting encounters electronically to ACIR – How accurate is it? Does your practice receive calls from parents regarding their child's immunisation status? There may be some steps you can take with your practice software. 
  6. Occupational assessment, screening and vaccination: NSW Health has a policy directive that can be used to determine if health care workers are vaccinated appropriately before they can work in public hospitals.
  7. Vaccination for asplenic patients: The Australian Immunisation Handbook provides recommendations regarding immunocompromised patients and Spleen Australia have updated information regarding recommendations for patients both over and under 18 years of age.
