Graduating Riverland Nursing Students Graduating Riverland nursing students with lecturer David Pickles and administrative assistant Tania Pilgrim. We've had another successful year for our graduating Bachelor of Nursing students at the CoNHS Riverland Campus in Renmark. All but one have now been offered a Graduate Program position for 2018. We consistently have 90-95% of our Riverland students gaining graduate positions each year, which is definitely a selling point for our campus. While many of the students are going to graduate positions in the Riverland region, others are venturing as far afield in rural South Australia as Port Lincoln. Several are going to Victoria, as health services in Western Victoria are increasingly looking to take nursing graduates from South Australia. Interestingly, all the Riverland nursing students who undertook clinical placements in Alice Springs had offers in the Northern Territory, with two going to Alice Springs and one going to Darwin. Nursing students recognise the importance of looking further afield for TPPP positions. However, rural health services do prefer to take rural students, or at the very least, students who have undertaken rural clinical placements. Therefore, volunteering for rural placements can definitely be advantageous for the Metro students when it comes to applying for a rural Graduate Program position. Get Funded for Germany! Visit from International Research Scholar Clinical Exercise Physiology academics from Flinders will be working with Associate Professor Lance Dalleck in a number of areas. Lance currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Exercise and Sport Science at Western State Colorado University in Gunnison, Colorado. Here, Lance is also the Director for the Centre for Wellness and Human Performance at Western State, which runs the “Wellness Elevated Program”. This program provides physical activity-based education and outreach to their campus and the greater community with an aim of enhancing health and wellness of campus and community members. Lance's clinical experience in this area will provide Flinders with valuable knowledge for similar work integrated learning opportunities using our Bedford Park Campus for our Masters in Clinical Exercise Physiology and Exercise Science undergraduate students. Additionally, Lance will be contributing to a multi-centre research trial titled, 'Is personalised moderate intensity exercise training combined with high intensity interval training more effective at improving training responsiveness when compared to moderate intensity exercise training alone? – A multi-centre randomised trial'. Coupled with other research activities, Lance's visit will enable a contribution to the new topics in the Clinical Exercise Physiology Masters program, given his extensive experience as a program director for Clinical Exercise Physiology in the US. Torrens Resilience Institute Update The Torrens Resilience Institute (TRI) recently welcomed Dr Rebecca Hoile, a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosives (CBRNe) expert who joined TRI from INTERPOL in France. Dr Hoile is working alongside the TRI on numerous World Health Organisation (WHO) projects, one of which is the delivery of a colloquium. Entitled "The Scientific, Health and Security Considerations of a Possible Deliberate Disease Outbreak", the aim of the colloquium is to promote the exchange of scientific and theoretical information that is reflective of current challenges facing global health security and the intersection between health and security during a deliberate event. It will bring together over 45 invited international participants from over 21 countries including representation from regional WHO offices, academic institutions, national health authorities, the security sector and international organisations over a 3 day period. The colloquium will be the first of its kind, providing a unique opportunity for WHO to address global health security challenges from a scientific and theoretical aspect, in preparing for and responding to deliberate disease outbreaks and forms part of the strategic TRI work plan as a designated WHO Collaborating Centre for Mass Gatherings and Global Health Security. If you would like to register as a volunteer for this event, please contact Rebecca Hoile in the first instance and further information will be dispatched.
