New Town Retail Precinct UpgradeApril UpdateWork is progressing ahead of schedule with the first section of footpath renewal from 90 New Town Road to the corner of Pedder Street now completed. The new safe pedestrian access ramp crossing at the Seymour Street junction with Pedder Street and the footpath upgrade outside 37 Seymour Street are also finished. Current worksConstruction is now well underway on the section of footpath on New Town Road in front of the stand of eucalyptus trees at the end of Pedder Street. Careful consideration needs to be given when digging around the roots of these iconic trees. A new shallow landscape bed is also being built on the Pedder Street side. Upcoming worksConstruction of the pedestrian threshold across the Pedder Street junction with New Town Road will commence soon. The threshold will create a smooth, defined transition for pedestrians and improve accessibility for everyone. Upgrading of the asphalt footpath will continue adjacent to 98 New Town Road and then work will commence on the first part of the streetscape upgrade. Pavement reconstruction, new pavers and garden beds are new features included in the works on the southern side of New Town Road opposite Pirie Street. Partial Closure - Pirie Street, New Town Road Junction and Changed Traffic Conditions on Roope StreetThe City will be undertaking investigative work at the intersection of Pirie Street and New Town Road from 7-9 May 2019. For this work to be carried out safely, drivers will only be able to exit Pirie Street onto New Town Road and entry into Pirie Street from New Town Road will not be permitted during the works. Also, during this period, Roope Street will be converted to one-way with traffic moving from the direction of New Town Road to the Pirie Street intersection. Parking along Roope and Pirie Streets will be restricted within the construction area. Residents and businesses directly affected by these partial street closures have received further detailed information. If you would also like to receive this information about the changed traffic conditions from 7-9 May please contact Louisa Gordon on the details at the bottom of this e-newsletter. Introducing Cole NightingaleCity of Hobart Team Leader, Cole Nightingale (pictured right), oversees the construction team on site on a daily basis. Cole liaises closely with businesses and residents directly impacted by the work to ensure that access is always maintained to their property. He also ensures that pedestrians can move safely around the work area. Any community members who are having difficulty with access around the works are encouraged to talk to Cole directly so that he can assist.
