Established in 2013 by NMF Alumna Yvonne S. Thornton, MD, MPH, FACOG, the Anarcha, Betsy, and Lucy Memorial Scholarship is given in honor of three slaves who, as subjects of experimentation that helped shape advances in current clinical and surgical knowledge, are recognized today as the Mothers of Gynecology. This scholarship provides two (2) $5,000 awards to African-American women who are known descendants of American slaves. Applicants must be enrolled accredited US medical school programs. Read on for a profile of last year's recipient, Ms. Erin Saner. 2017 Recipient of the Anarcha, Betsy, and Lucy Memorial ScholarshipMs. Erin Saner, a native of rural North Carolina, is a 4th year medical student at Wake Forest School of Medicine of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. She is Liaison of Thankful Community Health Care as well as Founder and Chair of Boomer Share the Health Fair, which partners medical students with leaders of the Thankful Community Center to increase health awareness and education in medically underserved counties in NC. Ms. Saner regularly volunteers at the local student-run free clinic Delivering Equal Access to Care, providing direct patient care and clinical teaching to lower-level medical and PA students, and in 2015 participated in a one-week medical outreach in Part-au-Prince, Haiti. In 2017 she was awarded the Wake Forest University Mentoring Skills Certification, and has received Silver and Bronze Presidential Service Awards in 2016 and 2015. Over the past decade, Ms. Saner has upheld the Wake Forest pro humanitate motto, receiving recognition for dedication to service, and hopes to continue serving her community as a Family and Community Medicine physician in North Carolina. |
