There's an attempted coup taking place in Washington D.C. today.

Literally.

I wish this email was written under better circumstances but 2020 is still leaking into 2021. Earlier this afternoon, white supremacists, incited by the sitting President, stormed the U.S. Capitol building in an attempted coup while Senators met to confirm the overwhelmingly verified election of President-Elect Joe Biden.

As of writing, at least one person was shot inside the Capitol while elected representatives and personnel donned gas masks, dropped to the floor for protection, fled the building, and confederate flags made their way through our most sacred halls.

It’s a terrifying—but not unexpected—development in one of the most turbulent periods in our history. It’s worth noting that, in stark contrast to the over-policed, largely peaceful protests in support of Black Lives, the terrorists and insurrectionists in the capitol today were met with little resistance from police forces.

Donald Trump’s presidency has been one attack against democracy after another. While many, many things should have been done to stop him in the past four years, this is an important opportunity for Congress to take a final stand and remove him from office under the 25th Amendment.

In between watching news reports and doom-scrolling Twitter, I wrote a letter to my representatives in both the House and Senate pleading with them to invoke the 25th in response to Trump’s sedition. I urge you to do the same, then talk about what’s happening with your family and friends.

Not sure what to say? I made a draft of my letter public on Google Docs. Use it, adapt it as needed, and add fuel to the fire of defending our democracy.

Stay safe and don't give up.
