Private training days are something we’re doing more of at Wilderness Survival Skills. Last week we had this incredibly keen group in the woods for a team building day. They immediately got stuck into learning how to use their issued bushcraft tools by making an adjustable hazel pot hanger per group. After a foraging walk the carving continued as we covered wet weather camp fire prep and ‘feathering’ split wood to act as both tinder and kindling. Lunch was a pigeon tagine (game prepared by the group) and in the afternoon the groups raced each other to be the first to light their fires using only spark sticks and gathered materials. The first to boil a billy of water for tea, were the victorious winners. It was a whirlwind day of learning, doing and having a laugh too! Last Friday (after the buckskin & moccasin combo 5 day workshop) I was back in the woods for a private 2-1 training day. We focused on the bow drill method of fire lighting by friction, gathering all parts of the set from the woods that morning. This was something the clients were keen to do as although they’d been successful with bow drill before, the parts were always pre-prepared. This was a lot more of a challenge and one they rose to with successful embers both. We rounded off the day with a resource foraging walk looking for alternative bow drill materials and the best wild foods to gather for his Hunter Gatherer Challenge this autumn. A great day ! Please get in touch to plan your adventure! We still have places left on our Wilderness Survival & Bushcraft introductory weekend dates, 5th - 7th July and 27th - 29th September. |
