Greetings Health Directors,

Environmental Services Technicians or EVS Technicians (aka custodial staff in healthcare settings) are one of the most important members of the healthcare team. They are specialists in environmental cleaning in highly sensitive and vulnerable settings. Their higher level of technical knowledge and awareness of Infection Prevention and Control measures makes them unique in comparison to those providing cleaning services in residential and commercial settings.

Micro-organisms such as those causing disease can exist and survive on many surfaces that we touch every day. Since nursing stations and health centres/clinics are where people seek healthcare services, these areas are considered to be highly vulnerable in spreading infections not only to those within the facility but to others in the community. This places a great importance on the cleaning and disinfection of these settings.

The first of the series will focus on IPC considerations for EVS technicians. This training is important to EVS Technicians (aka custodial staff in healthcare settings), and open to Health Directors/supervisors, and members of the healthcare team. The training will supplement information on the technical aspects of EVS technicians which will help clarify their role in the healthcare team as well as introduce quality improvement methods.
