Liters Plus by MEDCO hosted SmartFleet, the first fleet management conference in Lebanon, at the MEDCO e-motorshow on the 12th of April. The conference kicked off with a panel of experts from different industries, sharing their experience, knowledge, and future trends and technology in fleet management, moderated by Mr. Ralph Khairallah, Cofounder and CEO of Carpolo. The panel discussion was followed with a presentation by Mr. Youssef Yazbek, Partners Account Manager at DBT and opportunities for networking rounded off the event. Assaad Sebaaly Mr. Assaad Sebaaly, aramex Country Manager, revealed the huge benefits aramex experienced when they optimized their operation by creating hubs and line hauls. The results were decreased in driving hours of couriers, fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, pollution, and vehicle servicing cost. “If you don’t have enough volume to make enough stops versus your mileage, you better outsource those areas, else you won’t be able to save on gasoline” Rony Irany Mr. Rony Irany, Head of Fleet Management Operation at Seter, emphasized the importance of telematics that can be derived from a fleet management system, whereby each vehicle user’s behavior can be tracked and analyzed. You can get more details on Mr. Rony’s presentation in the link below. “Fuel consumption is directly impacted by the way in which a vehicle is driven” Mira Raham Mrs. Mira Raham, Loop General Manager, expressed the convenience and ease of using Loop, and how this fleet management software mounted on electric scooters parked at MEDCO stations is contributing to reducing traffic and pollution in Beirut, especially with the alarming figures regarding traffic in the city. Ali Harkous & Hussein Ibrahim Mr. Ali Harkous, FDC Facilities & Procurement Manager and Mr. Hussein Ibrahim, FDC Fleet Manager discussed the savings and optimization gained from in-house services for their fleet, such as in-house vehicle wash, With MEDCO's Call4wash services which allocated more time for operations and increased deliveries. “We have shifted to ecofriendly facilities and are willing to shift to EV fleets as well, as soon as the proper infrastructure is laid down”. Tarek Chaaban Mr. Tarek Chaaban, IPT (Integrated Power Technology.) Powertech Senior Operation & Maintenance Manager, highlighted the advantages of fleet management and tracking to control operations, induce savings and achieve a swift and accurate response time for their clients. “When monitoring driving behaviors, we found that it’s better to inform the drivers and clarify the procedures expected from them, for their safety and the overall public welfare”. Andre Matar Mr. Andre Matar, LRC Task Force Member for Customs, Logistics & Security, talked about safety measures to be taken while driving in normal circumstances, in weather difficulties, and while there is an ambulance on the road. “Vehicles following ambulances cause stress for the driver who is concerned about the patient, paramedics, the cars in front of, and now the ones following the ambulance. We urge people not to follow ambulances in order to facilitate our mission”. Youssef Yazbek Mr. Youssef conveyed his experience in Europe, providing insights on several topics questioned by the panel. His presentation also covered many subjects regarding electric vehicles for fleets including the quantitative and qualitative benefits, challenges in Lebanon, and key points to consider when shifting to electric vehicles. Panelists provided their key recommendations to optimize operations and save on fuel and maintenance expenses: - Organize operations to increase fleet stops per mileage - Rightsize vehicles and develop efficient routing plans - Use telematics to monitor driver behavior not only vehicle mileage and consumption - Shift to in-house maintenance and services - Shift part of the fleet to EV, starting with electrical motorcycles which have already witnessed success and demand In addition, there was a consensus on the need for both joint corporate and governmental efforts to lay the foundation and move forward with the shift to electric and hybrid electric vehicles. This was detailed by Mr. Yazbek, especially that the savings from such a shift are not instantaneous.
