Parent Informational Session on GenderOn Monday, April 23, UDA hosted a presentation about gender given by Darlene Tando. We were pleased both by the turnout and the robust discussion. Thank you to all those who attended! One powerful message conveyed at the presentation was the importance of taking an affirming stance with our young folks. In Darlene's words, they should be hearing this message from us: "Any way you are is OK." This presentation is an example of one of many positive steps being taken to ensure that UDA is a supportive, inclusive, and safe space for all. We plan to hold additional presentations and workshops as we move forward. If you weren't able to attend and you have questions about the event, or have suggestions for topics you would like to see discussed in this type of forum, please feel free to contact Chloe Medina (cmedina@urbandiscoveryacademy.com). Earth Day Community EventOur students, families, and staff had a wonderful time celebrating our planet and learning about ways to protect it at our Earth Day Community Event last Friday! Our students learned about composting, water conservation, farming, and more, and had fun while doing so through participation in games, trivia, arts & crafts, and informational booths. Congratulations to our Earth Day Trivia Contest Winners- Evan S. and Grace L.! Smarter Balanced Practice TestsIn order to help familiarize 3rd-8th grade students with the Smarter Balanced testing interface and support features for online CAASPP testing in May, we encourage our students and families to review the practice tests that mimic the summative assessments. The practice tests, as opposed to the training tests, are grade specific and are available in the areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics. Each content area includes two tests: Multiple Choice and a Performance Task. To help your child become familiar with the testing interface and the types of questions he/she may be asked, follow the steps below: 1. Go to www.caaspp.org 2. Click on "Practice and Training Tests" 3. Click on "Student Interface Practice and Training Tests" 4. Sign in by checking the boxes for Guest User 5. From there, the student can select the appropriate grade level and practice test Third GradeUDA 3rd graders celebrated Earth Day in a big way! In the weeks leading up to Earth Day, students researched best practices for composting and food waste reduction. They even went behind the scenes at Ralphs grocery store, and returned to the classroom with news ideas for their compost system. At UDA’s Earth Day event, they eagerly shared their knowledge at the 3rd grade composting booth and had lots of fun showing how worms help make compost. Visual ArtsStudents in 4th grade welcomed a guest artist who shared the process of developing a fashion brand. The students learned about patterns, fabric printing, fashion design, production, and company operations! Camp Urban SolThis summer, the UDA Foundation will once again host Camp Urban Sol, an assortment of half-day courses taught by credentialed teachers. Participating students will continue to learn over summer through hands-on activities, experiments, community adventures, and play.
