Looking for an affordable electric bike with top quality componentry & 2 yr warranty?
MeloYelo '66Cross ebikes go head to head with ebikes costing more than twice their price on
the Pureora Timber Trail.
The Pureora Timber Trail, located between Taupo and Te Kuiti, is an 85km, 2-day ride boasting some of the highest and longest suspension bridges in New Zealand. The Timber Trail weaves its way through ancient forest, across ancestral lands of local Maori Tribes, and along part of the historic Ongarue Tramway.
Last week a group of 10, all aged 65 or older, set out in rainy, muddy conditions to tackle this trail on ebikes. Four members of the group were on MeloYelo ebikes, five were on rented Scott ebikes, and one was on a mountain bike that had been retrofitted with an
electric motor kit. For comparison, the Scott bikes retail for around $5900, while the MeloYelo Cross bikes retail for $2566.
How did the MeloYelo bikes fare?
The MeloYelo ebikes performed without fault. The trail was quite wet and muddy, and those riding the MeloYelo bikes appreciated the thumb throttle which helped them push through deeper, muddy puddles which others got bogged down in. (The Scott bikes did not have a thumb throttle.)
Given the muddy conditions, those on MeloYelo bikes also appreciated having the half mudguards on front and rear wheels. And,
because they had fitted carriers on their Cross bikes, they were able to attach waterproof pannier bags to their bikes to carry layers of clothing and food for the trail.
The MeloYelo ebikes handled the sometimes steep and muddy trail with flying colours. And at just $2566 they are less than half the price of other bikes which took part in this adventure. Asked what changes they would make to our bikes, those riding them said "wouldn't change a thing."
