This personal essay beautifully describes how a simple Saturday night session of painting nails can express much more. I loved this piece for its touching portrayal of a mother and daughter relationship, and the warmth they imbue their words with to show their care and understanding of each other despite differences in upbringing.

Maya Nussbaum joins Diane von Furstenberg, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and more change-makers on Politics NY and amNY Metro's list of Power Women for 2022. Maya started Girls Write Now to break down the barriers of gender, race, age, and poverty by mentoring the next generation of writers and leaders. From the beginning, she understood that writing is a communal enterprise and the true power of mentorship to access and elevate voices unheard.

The Apple HBCU Scholars Program is for outstanding students attending a Historically Black College or University. Scholars will participate in a 12-week internship with Apple in the summer of 2023, and will be rewarded with a $15,000 merit-based scholarship. Deadline: October 3.
