CHILD Cohort Study Co-Director appointed Tier 1 Canada Research Chair

Dr. Stuart Turvey is among 346 accomplished scholars whose new or renewed Canada Research Chair funding was announced by the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport.

Dr. Turvey was appointed as a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Pediatric Precision Health, on June 14, 2019.

“Pediatric Precision Health is a transformative approach for disease prevention and treatment that promises an individualized, molecular view of child health and wellness,” commented Dr. Turvey on his appointment.

“I am proud and excited about this award as it supports research that will empower the development of precision health-based strategies to address childhood asthma and life-threatening pediatric immune system disorders.”

Canada Research Chairs are world-class scientists and scholars from diverse backgrounds who are working on new discoveries and innovations that help our environment, health, communities and economy thrive.

Dr. Turvey is the Aubrey J. Tingle Professor of Pediatric Immunology at The University of British Columbia, and the Co-Director of the CHILD Cohort Study and leader of its Vancouver site. He is also an Investigator and Pediatric Immunologist at BC Children’s Hospital, which named him the 2018 recipient of its Geoffrey L. Hammond Lectureship. A breakthrough 2015 study co-led by Dr. Turvey showed that the presence of four gut bacteria in the first few months of life can protect against asthma. Building on that finding, Dr. Turvey now heads a four-year, $9 million Genome Canada-funded project that leverages CHILD Cohort Study data to further investigate the causes of childhood asthma in the infant gut microbiome.
