Website Editorial Meeting Hi, edit team! An agenda will be shared via Slack prior to the meeting so that you know what to expect or prepare for. Let’s make some storytelling magic!
Let’s face it—a college degree comes with a hefty price tag!! The good news is there’s plenty of higher education money out there! In this workshop, mentees will learn how and where to find money for school, the difference between grants, loans, and scholarships, and tips for writing stand-out essays and short answer responses tailored to specific funders. We’ll also cover some information about the FASFA form! Writing Works Mentors will help mentees craft their written scholarship application materials and offer small
group feedback in breakout rooms. Whether you’re applying to college now or you’re already in college, join this workshop to learn strategies for easing your higher education financial burden!
Community Chat for MLK Jr. Day: Poetry has the power to change someone’s day, their mind and even the world. It is the articulation of dreams and hopes. Who better to honor with poems than Martin Luther King Jr. who shared his dream in the form of poetry? Influenced by Audre Lorde’s belief in using the pen to fight the fight, join spoken word artist Brittany Barker as she shares her poetry and invites you to write your own.
Open Submissions: Publish Your Work!
Queens native and O. Henry Prize recipient, Daphne Palasi Andreades, will discuss drawing from what we intimately know—our lived experiences, our hometown, our family—and combining this with our imagination to fill in the blanks. A creative combination that will make your fictional world and characters jump off the page, Daphne Palasi Andreades will also speak about her writing process and publication journey behind her debut novel, Brown Girls.
