Complete an Internship in France with a Nicholas Baudin Travel Grant
The Nicholas Baudin ‘Internship in France’ initiative offers students the opportunity to undertake a research internship at a French host university in collaboration with an industry partner. A wide range of internship project topics are available and can be viewed here. To apply for this funded
internship program, complete the application form by 30 Apr.
Faculty of Science Thesis Bootcamp: 18 – 20 May
This Thesis Boot Camp is a thesis writing intensive for late stage graduate research candidates. Applicants will spend the weekend writing, with the aim of producing at least 1 chapter, or up to 10,000 words by the end of the camp. An academic from the Faculty of Science will be available to guide the writing process and provide consultation on an individual basis. Cost is $25 (refundable upon completion of the Boot Camp). Interested students are encouraged to complete an Expression of Interest. Applications close Mon 30 Apr.
Three Minute Thesis Competition
The Faculty of Science will be running its first Three Minute Thesis competition in May with a $500 prize for the winner! The event will showcase the great research happening across the Faculty and give students the chance to prepare for the University’s central 3MT competition which begins in July. To register your interest in participating, please complete this form.

Thinking about a career after your PhD? Employability Week hosts a series of sessions and events to help you prepare for employment opportunities ahead. Research Design Jam for early stage PhD students
This event is designed for early stage PhD students from any discipline who have an interest in any issue related to the networked society. This event provides early stage PhD students an opportunity to work outside your normal skill set, in a supportive environment, and learn new methodological approaches at this early stage in your own research. AMSI Optimise 2018
Returning in 2018, AMSI Optimise is an annual networking and research-training event that aims to strengthen mathematical optimisation research engagement and its applications across industry. The symposium features expert and end-user talks, international guest speakers, collaboration showcases, industry challenge sessions and tutorials. 18-22 June. More info here.
GSA Graduate Researcher Network: Social Media for Academics
For our next Graduate Researcher Network event, we discuss how you can use social media to connect and collaborate online. We’ll talk through the benefits and dangers of different social media platforms and explore strategies and tools to help you build a research network. Enjoy a delicious lunch, chat with fellow graduate researchers, and listen to an informative panel of speakers. It’s FREE and open to all graduate researchers. 2018 Winter School in Mathematical & Computational Biology
The series of winter schools is designed to introduce bioinformatics, mathematical and computational biology to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers and others working in the fields of biology, mathematics, statistics, computer science, information technology, complex systems analysis, and chemical and medical sciences and engineering. The event is structured to present one important topic each day. Each day will consist of a mixture of extended lectures, software demos, and interactive discussions. AINSE Postgraduate Research Awards (PGRA) Scholarships
Post-graduate Research Awards (PGRA) are offered by AINSE Limited (the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering) for suitably qualified persons wishing to undertake studies in AINSE's fields of interest for a higher degree at an AINSE member university. Applications will be received up to 15 Apr. The award provides a stipend of $7,500 p.a. and a generous travel and accommodation allowance to enable students to work at ANSTO facilities. Science Abroad Travelling Scholarships
In 2018 the Faculty of Science will be offering travelling scholarships of $1,500 to eligible students who have confirmed PhD-Science candidature. This year has seen a change in the application process, and students will not be automatically considered based on Study Away applications. Students should contact their School Academic Support Officer for information on how to apply. Selection for the Science Abroad travelling Scholarship will be undertaken by the relevant School and the Faculty of Science will notify those successful applicants. More info here.
Faculty of Science Postgraduate Writing-Up Award
The Faculty of Science Postgraduate Writing-Up Awards are supported through the David Lachlan Hay Memorial Fund and Albert Shimmins Fund. The Writing-Up Awards support Science graduate research candidates during the preparation of journal articles or books based on the thesis submitted for examination. Information on conditions and applications here.
The Faculty encourages students who are about to submit, or have recently submitted their thesis to consider applying for a PhD Internship. The opportunities below are paid internships (approx. $3000p/m) and the Faculty offers the Specialist Certificate in Research Practice for Scientists which provides a framework to support the internship and a qualification in recognition of completion. STEM sidebyside – Women in STEM program
The NEW 2018 veski inspiring women STEM sidebyside program is an initiative to support women in the STEM industries that is led by veski and Monash University with the support of the British Consulate General Melbourne. This dynamic program of workshops and networking opportunities are designed to empower women at different career stages with the skills, networks and mindset to develop and achieve their career goals within STEM industries. Free Workshop by the Melbourne Statistical Consulting Platform
This half-day free workshop will discuss the principles of producing graphs to enhance the quality of your thesis. It will cover a range of software packages available to University of Melbourne graduate research students. If you are frustrated about the quality of the graphs you are currently creating and how much time it is taking, this workshop is for you! Wed 30 May between 9.00am – 12.30pm. More info here.

GReP Changes to Grad Space
Grad Space, formerly known as the Graduate Research ePortfolio (GReP), is a Melbourne Centre for the Study of Higher Education (Melbourne CSHE) online community for graduate researchers. It includes online courses such as Postgraduate Essentials (1 and 2) which support graduate researchers through the first and last 6-12 months of candidature, as well as master classes on attending
conferences, publishing, and getting the best out of library resources. In 2018, new resources to support graduate researchers throughout candidature, and career planning will be made available – watch this space for more!
Australian-French Entrepreneurship Challenge 2018
Applications for the third 2018 Australian-French Entrepreneurship Challenge are now open! The Australian-French Entrepreneurship Challenge is designed to bring together creative minded PhD candidatures to brainstorm innovative ideas from concept to creation, in the space of 24 hours. Organised by Macquarie University with the support of the Australian Academy of Science, the French Embassy in Australia, and the Australian and French business communities. The deadline for applications is Mon 7 May at 9.00am. More info here.
Advanced Neuroscience Workshops
The MNI Advanced Neuroscience Workshops are offered annually. These workshops offer students the opportunity to develop skills in key areas that they, with the support of their supervisor, identify to be directly related to their research project. Each workshop has been designed to provide a comprehensive, small group experience. Workshop topics range from 'Magnetic Resonance Imaging' to 'Neural Computational Modelling'. More info here.
Fresh Science opportunity
Have you got some interesting research results, a discovery or invention, and are you curious about how to get publicity for it? Consider nominating for Fresh Science – a national competition helping early-career researchers (including PhD candidates) find, and then share, their stories of discovery. The program takes up-and-coming researchers with no media experience and turns them into spokespeople for science, giving them a taste of life in the limelight, with a day of media training and a public event in their home state. Counselling and Psychological Services
UoM’s Counselling and Psychological Services provides more than their very valuable counselling appointments - there is a workshop program that includes topics such as Overcoming Procrastination and Resilience and Wellbeing as well as webinars and weekly Mindfulness Workshops. Learn to swim in semester 2
The Water Safety Program is a FREE aquatics education initiative provided by MU Sport. The program is tailored to students who have never had the opportunity to learn about swimming and water safety. Prof James McCaw featured on ABC Radio National
Professor James McCaw was recently featured on ABC Radio National discussing the importance of mathematical modelling of infectious diseases. Quantum boost for medical imaging
Professor Lloyd Hollenberg and team discuss the future of medical imaging. Physicists have demonstrated how, using light, a diamond layer and quantum mechanics, they could potentially “light up” our molecular insides for more powerful MRIs. Read more here.
The genes that turn malaria into a killer
Dr Michael Duffy discusses the changing disease that is malaria. A small group of proteins are associated with the most severe strains of malarial infection and their discovery is a step towards a vaccine against the deadliest forms of the disease. Read more here.
