FAMILY WEEKENDFamily Weekend was held October 4 -6. It was a great weekend, over 500 family members visited our campus. Student Affairs sold items from previous Family Weekends at a discounted price to support our Student Emergency Fund.PRIDE WEEK According to Dean Paulk, Assistant Director in Intercultural Affairs, Pride Week 2019 was a rousing success. To see the campus come together to show support for the LGBTQ+ community was moving. The week started with a health fair and opportunity to take photos by rainbow-painted doors to represent coming out of the closet and a panel of LGBTQ+-identified students who shared their stories and struggles, as well as their honest and informative answers to questions from the audience. Tuesday, Sampson McCormick made folk laugh until they cried. Wednesday, S.E.X. in ICA taught us all more about STIs and safe sex practices. Thursday, there was a showing of the film Moonlight, followed by a panel of faculty and staff. Friday was our largest Drag Show yet, with over 1,000 attendees! Three WCU students performed in the show, and we couldn’t be more proud of their stellar performances! Saturday capped off the week at Blue Ridge Pride in Asheville with a van trip for students to attend, many of whom had never been to a Pride event before. The week was full of fun, learning, and joy. Many of our LGBTQ+ faculty, staff, and students saw visible signs of support and were able to see themselves recognized and celebrated as a part of WCU. Thanks to Last Minute Productions (LMP), Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA), and Intercultural Affairs (ICA) for their collaboration and support throughout this week of events.
