The best milkshake ideas, a shepherd shares his life, adorable ducklings, questions to ask when starting your own business, and more. |
This week, we’re going to try something a little different. My introduction is going to be full of content that did NOT make it into the newsletter but is still worth noting, so everything below is a delightful surprise (no spoilers!). As always, let us know what you think on /r/upvoted—and this week you can also fill out an official survey to let us know how we’re doing!
There was another earthquake in Nepal, so we announced an update from our fundraiser and the progress DirectRelief and MAP International had made because of your donations (over $250,000!!). Plus, we’re now selling limited-run “redditors for Nepal” shirts designed by the supremely talented youngluck—all profits split 50/50 between the two aforementioned orgs.
You’re really amazing, reddit. Thank you.
You kept the feelings coming with this Big Bird AMA, this redditor who received a birthday card from his deceased father, and a GIF proving that even boars can be cute.
This week’s episode of the Upvoted podcast might be my favorite yet, and not just because it features Yoinkie2013, motivatinggiraffe, and Arnold Schwarzenegger (/u/GovSchwarzenegger on reddit)—though that helps. You should give it a listen!
I assume you mean the text? “If you tried translating the runes you are morons :)” |

If you take inflation into account the VOC (Dutch East India Company) is the richest corporation in the history of the world. |
The Bulgarian folk song Izlel e Delio Haydutin has been flying around open space together with Bach’s and Mozart’s greatest works since 1977 when the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probes left the Earth. The first woman ever taking part in a combat mission was the Bulgarian Raina Kassabova. Bulgaria is the country with the highest number of natural mineral springs in Continental Europe—over 600. This year a Bulgarian guy had the perfect 2400 SAT score. |
[US] 100 acres of pizza are served every day. |
what personality do the sheep have? |
Herdwick sheep are a ‘primitive’ breed (or more so than most modern ‘improved’ breeds) - they are very independent and very single minded - they like to be with their own kind… and are suspicious of change… They have very expressive faces as well. |
Do you use dogs to herd your flock? If so, what breed? |
We use Border Collies. The smartest herding dogs in the world. Mine are called Floss and Tan. And Floss just had 10 puppies. |
Two months ago, a video of an amateur mixed martial arts match in which the “tough guy” got put beautifully in his place made it to the frontpage of reddit, and following the hype, Ben10MMA showed up to answer questions: “I am that dude that knocked out the tatted up jerk in 20 seconds. AMA!” He was then able to turn the virality caused by reddit into a bid with UFC in Australia.
All those other companies on the banner are paying sponsors. But he put reddit up there and on his shorts because he likes reddit, and he wanted to thank everyone who supported him. Pretty cool!
We also really loved this spectacular combination of Mortal Kombat and Weird Al and this creation from /r/animegifsound.
codybmusser has worked with a lot of startups and entrepreneurs, and he has created an amazing list of questions that every early-stage company should know the answers to, including customer data, competition, budget, marketing, and tons more. If you’ve ever wanted to start your own company or get involved in startups, here are the things you should be thinking really hard about.
As someone working on a startup that I hope will be looking to bring on some new people in the very near future, this is helpful to me as well for me to review where I have strengths and opportunities. |
Ok, so you may not need to be able to tie your shoes in record speed (but it’s still so cool to watch, right??), but if you’re a person who experiences foot pain, the couch to 5k subreddit also shared an awesome guide for different shoe lacing patterns to solve your woes on the road to getting in shape.
forthefriends shared this photo and story of a student who came to class with her child because she didn’t have a babysitter. When her kid started to cry in class, embarrassed, she got up to leave, but the professor took the kid from her, calmed him, and then continued teaching.
Thinking of a cool treat now that the weather’s warming up? /r/cooking took some time to brainstorm their best milkshake ideas—and they have our mouths watering!
Please also take our 2-minute survey so we can keep improving and you can enjoy Upvoted Weekly even more!
