This year there are over 160 ​ways to celebrate National Aboriginal Day at health and wellness events across BC on June 21!

Activities include Cultural Safety Workshops, Run/Walk Events, Health Workshops, Community Feasts, Canoe Races, Totem Raising, Sweat Lodges, Hoop Dancing, Weaving Workshops, Storytelling with Elders, Traditional Medicine Gathering, and many others!

‘Living With Cancer’ Resource Published to Support First Nations, Métis, and Aboriginal Peoples on Cancer Journey in BC

COAST SALISH TERRITORY - The First Nations Health Authority, Métis Nation BC, BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres and the BC Cancer Agency have partnered with First Nations and Métis cancer patients, survivors and their families to create a new resource that aims to support individuals and families on their cancer journey.

The “Living with Ca​ncer: Everyone Deserves Support” resource includes culturally appropriate and safe information on patient rights and navigating the cancer journey. The information is told through the stories of Indigenous cancer patients and their families who have gone through a cancer journey.

The book will be available at the offices and centres of each partner organization, as well as online here! 

A Message from the FNHA on Netflix Series 13 Reasons Why to Parents, Caregivers and Other Concerned Adults

Recently, Netflix released the series 13 Reasons Why and the show has been trending among many diverse audiences. Concerns have been raised regarding the potential risk the series may have in sensationalizing suicide, especially among youth. At this time, the FNHA would like to offer some advice in the event that it is a concern in your family, school or community.

Our Community, Our Water Grant Opportunity!

Water is an integral part of life, community and wellbeing. To help protect and celebrate the importance of water, particularly drinking water, in your community, the FNHA Drinking Water Safety Program would like to invite First Nations communities in BC to submit a proposal for a community water awareness day event!​

The objective of the Our Community, Our Water event Grant is to support awareness and preservation of First Nations' community drinking water sources. FNHA is providing small grants for BC First Nations Communities to support hosting these events.

First Nations Youth - Make a Short Video and You Could Win $1,000!

The FNHA is supporting a Youth Video Contest that will draw for another winner of $1,000 on July 1! All First Nations youth aged 13-16 living in BC have to do is create a short video (on your phone or video camera), telling us what you are doing (or plan to do) to change the impact of commercial tobacco in your life, community, family or friends.

Spring Flooding in BC - Canadian Red Cross Assistance

The Canadian Red Cross will be providing additional financial assistance to eligible households impacted by spring flooding. In addition to the initial assistance announced last month, the Red Cross will be assessing further household needs and providing additional financial assistance to those who qualify.

Individuals and families can use funds to cover costs for reconstruction and relocation, health needs, transportation needs, children’s needs, occupational needs, and more.

International Journal of Indigenous Health's Latest Publication

The International Journal of Indigenous Health has released their latest publication Volume 12, Issue 1.

Indigenous Early Learning and Child Care Framework

The Government of Canada, in collaboration with Indigenous Peoples, provinces, and territories are developing a National Indigenous Early Learning and Child Care Framework (IELCC) as a first step towards delivering affordable, high-quality, flexible and fully inclusive child care.

This IELCC Framework will establish a shared vision to guide future federal investments and programming. Engagement activities are being led by national Indigenous organizations, Indigenous partners and the Government of Canada and will run until July 21, 2017.
