Ground Floor Gallery

An exhibition exploring the experiences of post-World War II migrants to Australia. Featuring highlights from a collection of around 22,000 photographs taken by government photographers, the exhibition reveals what life was like for many living in Australia's migrant hostels.

A national tour developed and presented by the National Archives of Australia, this project has been assisted by the Australian Government's Visions of Australia program.

The Story Place, Mezzanine Level

The illustrated picture book Ten Pound Pom (Black Dog Books, 2017) by Carole Wilkinson and Liz Anelli shares the real-life tale of Carol Wilkinson's journey of migration from England to Australia. This exhibition explores the story, showing how Liz Anelli crafted the illustrations through layering sketches, collage, ephemera and digital techniques.

Workshop in focus: Suitcases - Stories of migration

Why have so many different groups migrated to Western Australia?

Students open a suitcase and use primary source materials from the State Library collections to piece together a migration story.  The class works together to create a timeline of migration to Western Australia.

Discover a world of stories, history and information to support classroom learning.  The staff in the Education Program facilitate a diverse program of FREE guided and self-guided workshops suitable for school groups, from Kindergarten to Year 12.  Students explore the Library's collections, investigate Western Australian history and be creative with technology and storytelling. The workshops link directly to the Western Australian curriculum and run for an hour.
