EXHIBITION
The Family in Disorder: Truth or Dare, Cinthia Marcelle
10 March – 27 May
Free entry

The Family in Disorder: Truth or Dare is the first UK solo exhibition by one of Brazil’s leading contemporary artists, Cinthia Marcelle (b. 1974, Belo Horizonte, lives and works in São Paulo).

Commissioned by Modern Art Oxford, a vast site-specific installation transforms two separate gallery spaces, presenting a mirror image of order and chaos. Each space began the process containing an identical set of materials arranged into a barrier-like structure, but during the installation Marcelle invited a group of six local artists and technicians to disrupt, dismantle and repurpose one of these structures, inviting chaos into her practice.

This new commission is realised in the wake of rising social inequality, both in Marcelle’s home country of Brazil and elsewhere across the world. Considering the exhibition as a space of occupation, the work is informed by the collective action of protest movements.

The Family in Disorder (2018) is presented alongside the premiere of Truth or Dare (2018), a video created following the artist's residency in South Africa.
