From the Editor's Desk

Hi, there —

July is my favorite month of the year (because it's my birthday month)!  My turning 35 a few weeks ago was met with a strange mid-ish-life crisis that all of you car enthusiasts would enjoy. Your RE, Kristen Poole and I decided to pony up a whopping $500 a piece and buy a Rallycross car together!  It's a 1995 Subaru Legacy, with 167,000 miles, and has what can only be described as -  something that was once called a clutch.  My white-knuckled drive home made me reconsider the purchase, but those thoughts were quickly quashed by the utter excitement of being able to play in the dirt with a Subaru.  To put it nicely, this thing is a gem...which is how she ended up with her name, Gemma.  Once it's driveable... you know, it has a clutch that actually communicates with the transmission, I am looking forward to getting my first ever Rallycross race under my belt.  In the mean time, I'll see you all tomorrow for the next Autocross, with a car that has a functioning clutch.

Venue Update

By Doug Austin
Due to overbooking of the facility, the administration at Penn State Harrisburg has decided to cancel all future events at their lot and we will not be able to use this facility as another autocross event location. While this is disappointing to all of us, it does highlight the importance of finding new locations to maintain the livelihood of our strong autocross program and following. If you know of any locations that have suitable open space and lack of physical hazards and barriers, or if you have any leads with contacts, please email us.

On July 15, Susquehanna region hosted a Northeast Divisional RallyCross event. This event had 49 drivers , the single highest competitor turnout of any of our RallyCross events since the program started in 2012! This event posed several challenges, most of which were related to the number of
drivers. Fortunately, many of the existing procedures only needed to be slightly expanded to accomodate the extra turnout. The course was groomed a few weeks prior to the event to smooth out the ruts,
undulations, and gravel road transitions. This with the bit of rain on Friday helped keep the course in good shape and the dust low, despite the 400 overall runs that elapsed over the course of the day. A
tempermental timing system kept that number from being 50 to 100 runs higher, and will need to be addressed in the very near future.

Next Month's Event

The next event is only a few weeks away! Don't miss out and make sure you register for the August 19 event, held at the Farm Show's Elmerton Lot

Farm Show's Next Doubleheader is Tomorrow!

Our event on July 2nd was the first time that the Susquehanna region SCCA had a new course designer in nearly 25 years. Thanks to the efforts of Ed Womer and the region’s setup volunteers, we kicked off another event as planned. Some special thanks go out to all of the seasoned autocrossers and volunteers who all came out both Saturday and Sunday who provided valuable feedback to course modifications that improved its flow and made it a fun and new challenge for all of those who chose to participate.

Our upcoming event this Sunday looks like it’s going to be another scorcher!

As most seasoned autocrossers know, it’s of vital importance to dress appropriately, stay hydrated, and keep plenty of sunblock on hand. The region will be stocking up on some extra water for those who need it, but if things go anything like our last event, we went through nearly four cases of water before the PM session even began and ran out earlier than anticipated. Remember to bring more than you believe you will need of supplies to keep yourself cool and safe for the entire day.

We look forward to seeing you there!

My family has been a car family since before I was born. My Grandfather and Father have both restored national-level award winning cars. As a kid we attended a lot of car shows and with how excited I would get, even as a toddler, my family knew I’d do something with cars when I got older.
