Health Gateway in Metropolitan QLD

On Thursday 17 September, CheckUP's workforce team were invited for the launch of Kelvin Grove State College's Health Simulation Centre, which also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding  with CheckUP officially engaging KGSC as the first Health Gateway School in Metropolitan Queensland.

The school's training centre is equipped with modern equipment such as hospital beds, wheelchairs, hoists and manikins (medical simulation dummies) enabling students to gain hands-on training aligned with their vocational studies in health. The school will continue to work in collaboration with CheckUP, Axiom College and other key industry stakeholders to further develop resources and opportunities to support student learning and pathways into the health industry.

Share Your Health Career Journey

The Personal Stories section on the Choose Your Own Health Career website highlights Queensland's students' career journeys through vocational education and training (VET) in health. Students share their experiences of successfully transitioning from VET to further education and employment and ultimately contributing to the state's growing health sector.

The Personal Stories form a source of inspiration for our young readers who are considering a health career but are unsure of where to start. These stories outline the many different career pathways available for students to embark upon while still at school, across both clinical and non-clinical roles within the health sector.

If you or anyone you know has commenced their health career via a VET pathway and would like to share their story, reach out to us at gateway@checkup.org.au or click the link below and one of our team members will reach out to you!

Industry Partner Engagement

Schools' engagement with local health service providers is key for students to maintain current knowledge of health sector developments, trial and self-select from different pathways and understand changing workforce needs to make an informed career decision. This engagement is also beneficial for staff to maintain industry currency and draw relevance in everyday teaching to students opting for health courses in schools.

As an Industry Partner to the Health Gateway program, your organisation will have the opportunity to interact with students and provide tailored training to a reliable and sustainable future workforce. You could participate in an existing program or work with CheckUP to develop new programs based on your organisation's workforce needs and capacity. You may already have developed your own program you would like us to support.

Celebrating our Health Heroes!

2020 has been an exceptionally challenging year for people across the world. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought an abrupt halt to life as we knew it. In addition to the millions of lives lost to the virus, the year has witnessed a broader impact on global tourism, manufacturing, trade and small businesses across all industries.

Queensland has had exceptional success with managing the spread of COVID-19 with a timely response by the Queensland Government and the state's health workforce. In the last week of September the state celebrated Health Heroes Week 2020, when Queenslanders recognised and paid tribute to all of the work being undertaken by our #HealthHeroes.

Queensland's success in curtailing the spread has also highlighted the need for a sustainable health workforce now and into the future. It further emphasizes the need for today's students to have the awareness, accessibility and opportunities to participate in the state's growing health workforce.

About the Gateway Program

The Health Gateway to Industry Schools program (GISP) is a two-year project being delivered by CheckUP in partnership with Queensland’s Department of Employment, Small Business and Training (DESBT). The project aims to develop school students’ knowledge and understanding of the varied roles available in the health workforce and improve their access to learning and experiential opportunities in Queensland’s growing health sector.

The project forms part of a broader Gateway to Industry Schools initiative which currently caters to ten distinct industry sectors. Click here to read more about DESBT's GISP projects.
