Shine the Light of Truth

Collection Curated by Editor-in-Residence Morayo Faleyimu

Journalist and civil rights activist Ida B. Wells once declared that the way to right wrongs was to shine the light of truth upon them. In our December collection "Shine the Light of Truth," our Girls Write Now journalists do just that. Their timely and evocative stories cover emerging trends and intimate moments. Read these compelling works to illuminate the world you think you know.

Building Racial Awareness: A Reflection on Socialization & Race

Friday, Dec. 8, 6 - 7:15 PM ET, Virtual

As part of our commitment to professional development, we ask all mentors to join us for a compassionate session on building racial awareness with expert facilitator Elise Jayakar. Throughout our lives, we have learned stereotypes and stories rooted in harmful racist messages. Together, we will unpack our past and present to explore the prejudiced messages that live within us, and empower ourselves with essential knowledge and insights to combat racism.

COMMITTEE STUDIO

Bread & Roses: On the Accessibility of Stories

Monday, Dec. 11, 6 - 7 PM ET, Virtual

If you're interested in joining a group dedicated to intersectionality in writing, come to the December IVEdit Committee studio! This month's topic centers on the accessibility of art. Stories, ideas, and perspectives are treated as a privilege, rather than a necessary part of life. As New York City's libraries are forced to close their doors on weekends due to budget cuts, join us for a timely discussion about accessibility of stories for all. To create an engaging environment, registration for this event will be capped, so register soon!
