We look forward to our students’ return on Tuesday. School Advisory Council Parent RepresentativesWe would like to extend a huge thank you to our departing team of parent representatives on our School Advisory Council for all of their time and contributions. Thank you Lauren Brookman-Frazee, Fred Gaston, Victoria González-Rivera, and Cindy Sener! We would also like to congratulate and extend a warm welcome to our new team of parent representatives: Sarah Goehring, Leslie Holt, Lisa Ryan, Cindy Sener, and Aliya Weise! In addition, Michelle Dion-Bernier and Julia Tarquinio have been elected as our teacher representatives on the council. We are looking forward to beginning our work together. At this time, we are still seeking an interested ELAC representative to join the School Advisory Council, so there is still one more seat to be filled. The first meeting is this Thursday, January 18 at 5:00pm at UDA. ELAC Information SessionsYou are invited to attend one of the four information sessions to learn about the English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) forming at UDA/Id8. If you are interested in possibly participating in the ELAC, or just want to know what it is, please join us in the conference room at UDA. We hope you all consider participating on this committee, especially speakers of other languages. We look forward to seeing you there! Information sessions will be held on the following days and times: WASC VisitLast Wednesday, UDA had our mid-term WASC accreditation visit. As you likely know, UDA participated in a full self-study in 2015 with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), resulting in a six-year accreditation term with a one-day visit. The visit went well, and we are grateful to the parents who attended the parent focus forum to provide their feedback. You and Me DanceJoin Girl Scout Troop 4159 (13 UDA 6th graders) as they host UDA’s 2nd annual “You and Me” Dance on Friday, January 19 from 5:30-8pm. For this event, elementary students (TK-5) get dressed up and bring a guardian to dance the night away with! The dance will be held at UDA, and tickets may be purchased for $5 each at school the week of the event or online. Please note, this is not a drop-off event and all students must be accompanied by a guardian. Middle School Winter Family SocialPlease join our middle school families on Friday, January 26 from 5-7pm for a potluck, selfie booth, crafts, cookie contest, and more. Students interested in entering the cooking baking contest should bring two dozen homemade cookies; awards will be given for “Best Tasting,” “Best Winter Themed,” and “Most Creative.” Please rsvp here if you would like to attend. In support of Alpha Project, there will also be a collection for blankets, jackets, and sweaters for the homeless. Please bring your donations to the social. Geography BeeIt is time to put geography skills to the test in UDA’s annual National Geographic Bee! Students in grades 4-8 who submitted a registration form will compete for a chance to move forward to the California state level, hosted by National Geographic. The qualifying round, held at UDA, will take place on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 8:45am in Mr. Clay's room. If you have any questions regarding the Geography Bee, please email Mr. Clay at eclay@urbandiscoveryacademy.com. Fourth GradeFourth graders recently completed their goal setting for the new year. In addition, the students discussed and shared what their hearts want more of in 2018! They are excited to continue building classroom community and increasing positivity around UDA in the new year. Seventh GradeSeventh grade students are diving into their 3rd novel of the year- a novel that explores the story of a Native American who leaves his reservation to attend an all white school, where the only other Native American is the mascot. The students are exploring the question: What happens when cultures collide? They recently had a debate about a local issue- whether or not SDSU should keep their mascot, the Aztec, or if this is cultural appropriation. Students are also continuing to explore themes of identity, acceptance, and social diversity. Visual ArtsStudents in 8th grade are using a variety of unique materials in the construction of their original sculptures. Jog-A-Thon SponsorshipsAsk your workplace to sponsor this event!
