Pupils, parents and teachers joined together to celebrate all that has been accomplished over the last six years at The High School. What a journey it has been for everyone and what adventures still lie ahead. We wish the class of 2017 all the very best in whatever their futures hold. MUN - Distinguished Delegate AwardsRecently, The High School participated in an MUN (Model United Nations) conference. In total sixteen pupils spoke in eight different committees over the two-day conference. There were many productive debates on topics including child labour, weapon trade, and global terrrorism. We also had the oportunity to meet new people with different ideas and for some it was a chance to catch-up with old friends. It was a great weekend for The High School with two of our members winning a Distinguished Delegate Award and everyone having a wonderful time. Geography Field TripLast week Form 6 Geography classes went on a field trip to Shankill Beach. All pupils doing Leaving Certificate Geography must study coastal erosion and produce a booklet on their findings. This is worth 20 percent of the overall marks. Our classes decided to look at erosion of the cliff on Shankill Beach. When we arrived at the beach we tested our hypotheses by measuring the height and frequency of the waves and the composition of the cliff. It was really worthwhile to see coastal erosion first hand and to spend the day out of doors. Gaisce HikeOn Sunday 1 October, some three dozen Form 4 pupils went on a hillwalk near Powerscourt as part of our Gaisce Award. We started by climbing a mountain called Djouce and finished by coming down near the Powerscourt Waterfall. It was a nice day but very wet and windy near the top. Still, it was a great hike, enjoyed by all. 'The Tempest' Art ExhibitionLast week Form 4 pupils produced an art exhibition as part of their English class. All pieces were inspired by Shakespeare's play 'The Tempest'. Items on display included a plasticine model of the magical feast, Caliban's cage, and Prospero's broken staff. Sparta PartyForm 4 classicists enjoyed hosting a 'Sparta Party' during the week, producing practical projects with a decidedly Greek flavour. Keen pupils created a collection of ingenious projects, like themed cakes and an armour pinata inspired by their six-week Classics module. Well done to all pupils who entered into the spirit of the occasion! Watch This SpacePupils have been enjoying Space Week at The High School. With projects featuring galaxies in jars, space slime, and alien conspiracy theories, pupils have been going out of their way to impress this year. We cannot wait to report on the best projects which will go on display in the Library in the coming weeks. Watch this space! Lego ClubA Lego Club has stated at The High School. It is run by Mr Deane and Mr O’Sullivan after school on Thursdays between 4.00 pm–5.00 pm. The High School will be entering a competition between schools in Ireland and the UK which will involve building a programmable Lego robot. The club is open to junior pupils, but any really interested older pupils are most welcome to attend. Donations of Lego would be greatly appreciated. A Date For Your DiaryThe annual Parents' Evening and Prize Distribution will take place at The High School on Wednesday 25 October at 7.30 pm. This year the guest speaker will be Ms Arabella Bishop, Senior Director and Head of Sotheby's Ireland. We look forward to listening to her speech and seeing our wonderful pupils receive their well-deserved prizes. Reformation 500The High School was delighted to welcome two senior representatives of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denmark - namely, the Very Revd Anders Gadegaard, Dean of Copenhagen and the Very Revd Anne-Sophie Olander, Dean of Roskilde - to address pupils at Assembly as part of a series of events to mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The event also recognizes the 25th anniversary of the Porvoo Common Statement which established full communion between and among fifteen European Anglican and Lutheran churches in 1992.
