Celebrate Family Literacy Day 2023!
Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative to raise awareness of the importance of reading together and engaging in literacy related activities as a family. This year’s theme is “Celebrate Your Heritage.” Learning as a family not only helps to build strong literacy skills for both adults and children, but it also strengthens family bonds and ties. With Family Literacy Day just around the corner on January 27, now is the perfect time to sit down
and cozy up as a family to learn about your heritage. After all, there no better way to learn about your family than together as a family. Here are 10 activities families can do together to learn more about their heritage: - Research your family’s place or origin. Ask a Librarian for help on researching where your relatives were born.
- Interview a family member. Speak to a family member about
where they grew up and what it was like. Write a story about them!
- Learn a new language. Use the library’s online resource, Transparent Language, to learn new words in another language. Be sure to practice every day.
- Listen to traditional music. Many cultures have their own music. Research and listen to something new. Which style do you like best?
- Make a photo collage. Create a collage about what your family and heritage means to you.
- Make a craft with traditional designs. Research traditional designs of your culture. Create a craft using these designs.
- Look at a map. Where did your relatives once live?
- Read a story. Visit your nearest library location and ask for books about your heritage.
- Learn about where you live. Do you know about the history of where you live? Together as a family, learn about the culture and heritage of the place you call home.
- Cook a traditional recipe. Help to make your family’s favourite recipe from your culture. Yum!
