Plus: Bionic Suits, the Hardest-Working Dog in Tokyo, and a Video AMA With Felicia Day! |
Happy Sunday!
Yesterday, Team Reddit participated in Extra Life, a 24-hour gaming marathon to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Thanks to all of you who joined us by gaming, donating, or just spreading the word. (Sad you missed out? You can still donate here to help hospitals treat thousands of kids a year, regardless of their family’s ability to pay.)
This past week, redditors proved that they’re some of the best cat owners in the world. User tx_redditor constructed this insane DIY cat tower (which looks like it’s straight out of Labyrinth) for their cats Ellie and Buddy. And user limes_limes_limes posted an aww-inspiring video of her kitten—who was paralyzed six weeks ago—learning to walk again on an underwater treadmill.
This week, we featured another batch of great AMAs—with everyone from basketball star Jalen Rose to a voice actress from Archer. The best part of AMAs is that you really can ask people anything, as one redditor proved by getting rapper Redman’s permission to share a hilarious picture they took of him at Magic Mountain.
On Monday, we launched our 7th Annual Secret Santa Gift Exchange, and over 62,000 people (in 131 countries!) have signed up already. Sign up here to get (and give) the perfect present in the world’s largest Secret Santa exchange!
Sure it’s only November, but it’s never too early to get into the Christmas spirit.
Daniel Fleetwood, a 32-year-old Star Wars fan, isn’t expected to live long enough to see the premiere of The Force Awakens. So, after his wife asked Disney if he could view the film early, support for the request grew online—including thousands of redditors who helped share his story. On Thursday, Daniel’s wish came true.
Last December, redditors from the Futurology community suggested ideas for topics and guests to feature on a new show created by Wired and Reddit called Cyborg Nation. On Wednesday, the show went live—and the pilot episode highlights a cutting-edge bionic suit that’s helping people with motor impairments walk again.
User kenziespeights just wanted to cheer up her girlfriend by buying the flamingo purse of her dreams. Unfortunately, it wasn’t available online, and could only be purchased in person at a single store in London. So one UK redditor, user atlbeer, offered to pick it up and deliver it to the US himself—but before he did, he toured the bird bag all around London, taking some pictures of the purse’s adventures.
Marfan’s syndrome is a condition that causes your eye lenses to dislocate, making you look like a cartoon character with “googly eyes.” After zyloman posted this gif, other redditors with Marfan’s were inspired to share how the condition affects them.
Rhinos are in serious trouble. Some scientists estimate that by 2020, rhinos in the wild will go the way of the dinosaurs. But hope may come from a high-tech source. User HeartsickShoe86 shared that one company wants to genetically engineer fake rhino horns, undercutting poachers and saving rhinos in the process.
Reddit user hogpiesatwork was kicking around the Super Nintendo community, looking for some good ol’-fashioned video game nostalgia when he stumbled across a long-lost friend: his childhood SNES system that was stolen back in 2004. Who doesn’t love a Reddit reunion?
On Monday, the NBA celebrated the return of basketball season by presenting redditors with a gift: gifs of every team’s line-up on opening day over the past five years. In the words of user nilan_23692, “I didn’t know that I wanted this.” Now you know.
Reddit user AMA_or_GTFO wanted to know if giving leftovers a pre-fridge cool-down preserves the flavor and combats food-born bacteria. So the experts of the Ask Science community settled the question once and for all.
Last year, a video of Shiba-San the shiba inu manning a small tobacco shop in Western Tokyo hit the front page of Reddit. But the shopkeepers recently announced that they permanently shut their doors—and, yes, Shiba-San has retired as well.
Felicia Day: You might know her from Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, The Guild, her role as Violet on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or her new book, You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost). Now, redditors know her even better after her funny, candid video AMA with the Books community. (Her answers are never weird—almost.)
What’s the best thing you’ve ever heard a child say? User nannyuk asked redditors this question, and Shitty Watercolour illustrated the funniest (and most adorable) answers.
