Careers Service Employer Newsletter

Over the last academic year we’ve worked with hundreds of employers to deliver a packed calendar of employability activity ranging from fairs to presentations, interview boot camps to company tours, skills sessions to styling advice.

Take a look at our video snapshot of the year here - you might spot some familiar faces!

Our six targeted recruitment fairs welcomed over 200 employers, 14 sponsors and in excess of 4,000 students. We experienced some of our busiest events yet - the Internship Fair, Engineering & Technology Fair and The Careers Fair all sold out, and had waiting lists. Bookings are now being taken for all fairs and based on current employer interest we are anticipating more sell-out events especially for the Engineering & Technology Fair. Don’t miss out - book your stand here.

Student attendance at fairs increased; the Banking, Finance & Consultancy Fair saw a 200% increase in student footfall welcoming 600 students, the Engineering & Technology Fair hosted 570 students (+30%), the Charity & Volunteering Fair welcomed 170 visitors (+60%) and The Careers Fair opened its doors to 25% more visitors with 1,200 in attendance.

Over 100 employer presentations, skills sessions and drop-ins were available to students both on-campus and off-campus. Dates, and space, are already getting booked up for the next academic year. For more details or to book please see our employer website.

This year saw the launch of ‘The First Tuesday Club’, sponsored by First Glasgow Ltd. The First Tuesday Club is an exciting series of events designed to appeal to a broad student audience illustrating how career paths vary. Each event saw a well-known guest speaker share their career journey that more often than not led to a different destination than planned.

The First Tuesday Club guests included Gillian Kyle (International Designer), Christopher Brookmyre (Best Selling Author) and Donalda MacKinnon (Head of BBC Programming and Services). Future guest speakers include Susan Calman (Award Winning Comic), Head Sports Lawyers from Manchester United, Celtic, Everton and the Scottish tennis coach and current captain of the British Fed Cup team Judy Murray.

We also recruited 4 exceptional student interns, through our very own internship programme, to deliver 4 specific employability events: Mock Telephone Interviews with Employers, The Unusual Psychologist, Cultural Insights, and Recruitment in China.

We were excited in semester 2 to introduce MY Career Week; 5 days of innovative employer engagement, practical sessions, CV clinics and a bigger & better Careers Fair. We partnered with House of Fraser, Topshop, Debenhams and Taylor Ferguson to create MY Style Hub; giving students style advice for that all important interview or first day at work.

Our final event of the academic year ‘Global Skills Conference for International Students’ welcomed over 80 attendees. The event was specifically designed to support our international students identify and communicate their key selling points and strengths to employers across the globe.

Not all events took place in person; along with colleagues from Edinburgh and St Andrews University we continued to lead on the AGCAS Scotland China/SE Asia Virtual Career Fair. This year saw 60 companies profile opportunities to over 1500 students from the region.
