Message from the CEO

Award-winning apprentices and award-winning training, at both state and national level, is testament to the hard work of our apprentices, employers and staff!

Well done to our apprentices and students and congratulations to those who have completed their apprenticeship and are now qualified.

PEER continues to respond to the needs of our students and employers, through significant investment in training resources and the introduction of student centered learning and open learning. Our options for flexible attendance has received positive feedback from apprentices, students and employers, as students are able to attend trade school when their work is quiet.

Learner feedback shows that apprentices participating in open learning are more engaged and progress through their studies at a better rate. Those students preferring a more traditional training classroom setting, are still accommodated for and demonstrate the same level of engagement and achievement.

The introduction of PEER’s High-Performance Academy with Mark Bickley and Jacob Surjan, has promoted opportunities for our apprentices to set goals and be more motivated at work.

We’ve also responded to a significant demand for our trade events, which included a highly successful: Try a Trade for young women. In fact, over 250 young men and women attended our trade days at PEER.

With the consolidation of apprentice profiling systems and plumbing apprentices migrating to eProfiling, our communication and information portal: PEER CAMPUS, is now being rolled out to all apprentices and employers.

PEER CAMPUS provides employers and students with information about apprentice on and off-the-job progression. Updated daily, PEER CAMPUS provides useful real time attendance and trade progress information.

As well as recognition through winning awards, PEER has also been recognised by government, industry and other key stakeholders, including defence. Consequently, over the past 12 months privately employed apprentices attending PEER have increased by 300% and participants in Vocational Education and Training (VET) in schools, by 200%.

PEER has been approved by the South Australian government to run pre-apprentice classes through our Industry Ready Training Program in 2019 and we are negotiating to deliver several other exciting initiatives. More news on these early next year.

I would like to thank all our employers and suppliers for their valued ongoing support, as we continue building on past success and achieve even better outcomes in 2019.

I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and look forward to an exciting New Year!

SAFETY UPDATE

Trailers are common tools used by most tradies and carry everything from: tools of the trade, materials for jobs, equipment including scissor lifts, and recreational equipment for those weekends away.

What people don’t realise, is the significance of vehicle towing capacities and the requirements for towing trailers. Just because you have a vehicle with a towbar, doesn’t necessarily mean you can just hook up a trailer and go about your business.

Choosing Safety Glasses vs Goggles vs Face Shields

Australians suffer around 50 000 eye injuries every year even though many of them were wearing eye protection at the time of their injury.

Safety eyewear is often incorrectly fitted, is not rated appropriately for the task or does not provide adequate protection. Subsequently, injuries often occur when foreign bodies enter under, over or around the sides of the safety eyewear, according to a 2008 report from Safe Work Australia (SWA).

To ensure that PEER continues to fulfil the requirements of the Fair Work Act we will be commencing the payment of an hourly multistorey allowance. Many host employers cover this allowance as part of their site allowance in which case no change will occur. This will take effect for all apprentices that qualify from the first full payroll week commencing after the 1st January 2019.
