Measles remains endemic in many parts of the world, including destinations popular with Australian travellers, such as the Philippines, India, Indonesia (including Bali), and Thailand. Measles is also common in parts of the Middle East and most of Africa, and thee have been large outbreaks occurring across Europe and South America in the past few years. Rethinking Mental Health 6.0 - call for abstracts Rethinking Mental Health 6.0 is returning for another year! This year the forum will explore the theme a 'Whole of Health Approach to Mental Health'. RTMH 6.0 is welcoming abstracts from passionate, engaging and knowledgeable persons around innovations in mental health. If this sounds like you or a person, program or organisation you may know please apply or pass on the call for abstracts. Measles Alert – Sydney Airport and residents of Leumeah and Central Coast NSW Health has issued health alerts for two new cases of measles diagnosed in June. These latest cases of the highly contagious disease has pushed the total number of people in NSW diagnosed with measles to 36 this year. Active Learning Module in Obesity and Cancer The Translational Cancer Research Network is offering an Active Learning Module in Obesity and Cancer. The session covers both obesity as a risk factor for cancer and as a complicating factor in the long-term management of cancer survivors. The workshop will be held on Saturday 10 August from 12.30 pm – 6.00 pm at the Central and Eastern Sydney PHN Office. Measles vaccination catch-up guide NCIRS has developed a measles vaccination catch-up guide for Australian Immunisation Providers. Coaching for Better Health Outcomes Coaching for Better Health Outcomes is a comprehensive program aimed at developing and supporting clinician and health care professional skills in health coaching. Find out more about PANDA’s National Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Helpline PANDA - Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia - operates Australia’s only National Helpline that provides free specialist support for expecting and new parents experiencing mental health challenges. The Helpline can work with you to support the mental health of expecting and new parents in your care for up to 12 months. You can refer to the Helpline or your client can call PANDA directly. National Cancer Screening Register (NCSR) The NCSR is an integral part of the cervical screening pathway and plays a role in improving participation in the National Cervical Screening Program (the Program). The NCSR integrates with government data sets which, for the first time, enables the identification of never-screened eligible persons in Australia. To support the Program to increase participation, the NCSR will begin to invite newly eligible people aged 25 years and people aged 25 to 30 years who have never screened. This correspondence will be distributed from June 2019. The Department of Health is currently planning a broader campaign for the dissemination of invitations to eligible never-screened and under-screened people over the age of 30 to assist the uptake of Cervical Screening Tests and maximise
participation. The implementation of an inter-professional shared decision making intervention for older adults with polypharmacy in the context of Home Medicines Review: a pilot study Researchers in the School of Public Health at Sydney University are studying polypharmacy in the older population with the aim to develop strategies to increase patient involvement in decision making about their medicines. They have developed the Medicine Conversation Guide to be used by a pharmacist in as part of their Home Medicines Review (HMR) with older people experiencing polypharmacy. The researchers are seeking GPs who would be willing to refer patients for HMR including the Guide and be involved in a short interview and accredited pharmacists who would be willing to use the Guide in their usual HMRs and participate in a short interview. Helping your patients manage their alcohol dependence A session on pharmacotherapy for alcohol detoxification and relapse prevention is coming up on 17 July. This session covers the medications use to manage alcohol detoxification and relapse prevention for alcohol dependent patients. This session is for GPs, practice nurses and other allied health clinicians working in primary care. It will assist them to understand the principles of detoxification, relapse prevention and aftercare for patients with alcohol dependence and will help equip them with the skills to identify, treat and or refer for detoxification, manage relapse prevention and aftercare with their patients in the course of usual consultations. Improve mental wellbeing by getting active: Mood Active offer FREE exercise programs in Rockdale Mood Active, a charity association, are continuing to offer FREE programs in Rockdale designed to help individuals improve mental health through exercise. The program is running its third and final ‘4 Week Wellbeing Workout’ starting Friday 28 June. The program is a great way to support those looking to improve mental well being, connect with others and get active. Benzodiazepines Part 1 (held at St Vincent's Clinic) Please note GP Registrars who wish to register for this CPD event and do not have a member number will need to contact the CPD Department on 1300 986 991. This event, held on 26 June, is an ALM which qualifies for 40 Category 1 Points. To qualify for these points you must attend a Benzodiazepines Part 1 AND Part 2 workshop, as well as complete the predisposing and reinforcing activities. If you do not wish to complete the ALM portion you may qualify for Category 2 points which you can self report. Part 2 Benzodiazepines will be held on 23 July. Please check the website for details. Primary Care Cancer Forum 2019: Facilitated by Dr Norman Swan The Multicultural Primary Care Cancer Forum 2019 supports primary care health professionals including general practitioners, practice nurses and pharmacists to improve cancer outcomes for culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) patients.This activity has been accredited with 4 Category 2 points in RACGP QI&CPD Program for the 2017– to 2019 triennium. A certificate of attendance will be provided upon completion.
