Message from Dr. Peter Szatmari

Welcome to the first edition of the Cundill Centre newsletter.

Thanks to a philanthropic gift from The Peter Cundill Foundation, the Cundill Centre for Child and Youth Depression at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health is addressing a very serious illness—depression. Depression can lead to suicide, the second leading killer of young people in Canada. Many of the prevention and treatment options for depression were not developed for young people. We want to change that. How? Read on and learn more about our centre and its work.

What We Do

Vision

The international Cundill Centre for Child and Youth Depression will mobilize a global network of scientists, clinicians and experts and, in collaboration with youth and families with lived experience, will focus on developing best practices for the screening, prevention and treatment of child and youth depression, revolutionizing research, care and knowledge exchange.

Discover & Solve

Cundill Scholars launch projects to determine the best evidence-based practices for the screening, prevention and treatment of child and youth depression.

Share

We adapt clinical research findings into materials that can be accessed by a broad range of local, national and international stakeholders.

Lead

We bring together global child and youth depression experts, train young investigators in depression research and address gaps in care provision.

International Advisory Board

The International Advisory Board (IAB) meets four times a year to guide the vision, strategy and goals of the Cundill Centre. The board is made up of international experts in child and youth depression, along with business and community leaders.

Local Advisory Panels

Local Advisory Panels (LAPs) provide feedback on the appropriateness and clinical relevance of Cundill Projects. The panels are made up of local stakeholders and may include youth, families, service providers and policy makers. Learn more about the IAB and LAPs.

#CundillAtCAMH Conference

On November 17th, 2016, the Cundill Centre held its first conference at CAMH: Transforming Practice and Policy Through Science: A Joint Conference on Child, Youth and Emerging Adult Mental Health. Over 300 people attended, including policy makers, clinicians, researchers, youth and their family members. The conference featured an international roster of speakers from the United Kingdom, Australia and across Canada. Read more.

Speaker Presentations

You can find full video presentations on our website, along with PowerPoint slides.

Youth Engagement

Youth who attended the conference were asked to take pictures of slides or presenters they found interesting, important or meaningful. Their pictures have been compiled into a slide deck, which you can find here.

After the conference, youth were invited to participate in a debrief session, which allowed them to share their opinions about the day. Read more in this blog post.
