Is Tumblr Right for You?

There are plenty of social media networks for real estate pros to capitalize on. The question is which ones are best to promote your business? Here’s a glimpse into the pros and cons for one of the most popular, Tumblr.

Tumblr is a microblogging platform owned by Yahoo! Inc.  It’s a cross between a social network and a blog forum. Normal blogs are focused on making content. It’s way harder to get people to read them. On Tumblr, though, there’s a great tagging system that lets people find posts that interest them easily.

For agents, this can make it effective for getting exposure to property listings. Tumblr is also one of the most visually appealing and user-friendly platforms, which makes it a great way to build a following during a hectic work day.

On the downside, Tumblr doesn’t have the same freedom agents may get from having an independent blog, with something like WordPress. While easier to use for beginners than normal blogs, there is less room to customize formatting, which some agents find less desirable.  Also, your site may go down frequently, which occurs fairly often on Tumblr.

There are positives and negatives for real estate pros to use Tumblr. Each agent must choose for themselves what’s best for them and how it can promote their brand.

Be prepared for negative comments.

The majority of individuals will be positive on social media business pages. After all, most people would not waste their time on business pages they do not care that much about. However, there will also be a few who are discontent and want to publicize it to the world. It is important to know how to handle these negative comments.

Agents should plan ahead for dealing with negative comments on social media. There’s always going to be people who were difficult to work with and a decision was made not to continue to assist them in their real estate search, so it’s natural to expect some backlash. The trick is to handle them professionally and quickly so that they will have little importance and visibility.

Removing the comments should not the first reaction. In fact, comments should not ever be taken down unless as a last resort. This is because you don’t want your readers to doubt the honesty of the business page.  Instead, find ways to counter the comment with a well-constructed response either in rebuke or as an apology. Ignoring them is always an option too.

Tip: Always have a social media back-up plan

People constantly change. What was popular and effective for marketing two months ago may not be as productive today. And what’s good for today probably will need to be changed for success in the future.

Because of the rapid change in the market, it is always important to have alternate plans. Social media is hit or miss, and there is no guarantee that your strategy will persevere.  Don’t just have a Plan B; have a Plan C and a Plan D too. Have several ways to capture the attention of your target audience. Of course, you'll implement them based on the probability of success and your own best judgment.

Can’t go wrong with quotes

Quotes are typically very popular posts. Many people find them inspirational and personal.  For an agent’s purposes, they also generally gather a large amount of shares and likes. Consider incorporating more of these to your social media presence, especially if they coincide with a home buying or selling experience.
