Remembrance at The High School

This week The High School commemorated all those who died in conflict during the twentieth century in an Act of Remembrance.  In particular, the service of at least 476 past pupils who volunteered during the First World War and Second World War (of whom a total of 99 were killed) was marked in a short ceremony held during Assembly.  The Principal (together with the Head Boy and Head Girl) placed wreaths at the War Memorial window at Reception. You can learn more about past pupils of The High School who died during the First World War here.

Erasmian and Diocesan Times

We have just published this year's issue of The Erasmian and Diocesan Times.  This publication is the official record of The High School which has been published on an annual basis (with very few exceptions) since 1899.  The year book is produced 'in house' by a dedicated team of staff and pupils.  It aims to reflect key events and a wide range of pupil achievements in the course of the academic year.  If you would like to receive a copy of the latest issue please forward your full name and the years you attended The High School by email to reception@highschool.ie.

Green Schools

We recently installed two additional E-Car chargers at the school car park.  Easy-to-use, reliable electric vehicle charging is part of our Green strategy at the school. This brings to four the number of E-Car chargers on the school premises.

Form 4 Maths Club

Pupils in Form 4 have started an online Maths Club for Junior pupils who want additional help with Mathematics.  So if you need a little help prior to the Christmas examinations, or if you would simply like more Maths to challenge you, then please get in touch with Ms Deacon and join our new online Maths Club!

Form 4 Photography

Pupils in Form 4 who are studying Photography have taken some very evocative images of The High School campus in a collection entitled 'A Black and White World'.  Well done to Emily Curran, Niamh Doherty, Moya Quigley, Aadya Vig, and Luke Stephens.

Christmas Examinations

Forms 1,2, and 5 start their Christmas Examinations on 23 November.  A good night's sleep, regular exercise, and eating healthily are just some of the ways to help cope with examination stress.  Here is a helpful video which you might find useful.

Supervised Study

Supervised study is available after school from 4.00 until 6.00 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and has many benefits.  The cost for 4
weeks is:

1 day per week €15
2 days per week €30
3 days per week €45
4 days per week €60

The regular completion of homework and study during the year leads to less stress prior to examinations and less confrontation between pupils and teachers over incomplete or late work.  Study is carried out in the Library at 4.00 pm sharp under strict conditions and in silence without the distraction of mobile devices.  Payment can be made through the online system. In order to sign up for supervised study, please complete
the form (here) and return it to Mr McDonnell or Mr Barnard in an envelope with the pupil's name on the front.

Revision Tip!

Pupils have been busy in Geography class making beautiful and informative revision clocks.  The idea behind revision clocks is that pupils either focus on random topics, a category, or one specific skill within a set time frame.  Usually the time frame is 60 minutes and pupils need to be able to pace themselves.
Revision clocks are ideal for pre-examination preparation as it is a directed task which can include differentiation.  Here is how it works:  Break a topic down into 12 sub-categories. Then make notes in each segment of the clock.  Revise each slot for 5 minutes, turn the clock over and recite what you remember in each section of the clock - for example, what was in section 2-3.  This is a super way to break down a complex topic into bite-size pieces of information.

Leaving Certificate Examination 2020

We should like to send our best wishes to those recent past pupils who will be sitting their Leaving Certificate Examination in the coming weeks at The High School.  It has been a lengthy, difficult process for candidates and we should like to welcome them back to the school and wish them every success as they complete their final examination at second level.
