Reducing Emergency Room Visits for Opioid Overdose and Improving Care

META:PHI (Mentoring, Education, and Clinical Tools for Addiction: Primary Care-Hospital Integration) is providing better and faster care to people with opioid and alcohol addictions. The project has spread to seven communities across Ontario thanks to ARTIC (Adopting Research to Improve Care).

Early results show that hospitals in these communities are seeing fewer emergency room visits and hospitalizations, and patients are having significantly improved care experiences because of new follow-up treatment programs and expanded community supports.

Applications for the 2017 Minister's Medal Honouring Excellence in Health Quality and Safety are now available.

Presented at Health Quality Transformation 2017, the theme of this year's awards is Patients as Partners. This year, there will be three awards given to:

  • Teams working together to provide excellence in patient-centred care,
  • An individual provider who has demonstrated dedication, vision and leadership in championing high quality patient-centred care, and
  • For the first time, a patient, family and/or caregiver will receive an award for enhancing patient engagement in their community.

Apply by 5:00 p.m. on August 8, 2017.

Toronto's Michael Garron Hospital has come up with a novel solution to reduce the use of antibiotics in the emergency department - because they are frequently prescribed, leading to associated adverse events.
