Wycombe Phoenix Schools Cross Country

On Saturday 1st October, my running club, Wycombe Phoenix Harriers hosted its annual cross country races for schools in the Wycombe area.  The venue was at Hughenden Park, which is close to High Wycombe town centre.

I know this course well, since I train here in the winter months for events like this.  I have been to this event in years 5, 6 and 7 so I know it’s very tough since you have to run through 4 streams during the run, but it’s not just the course, but the competitors who race against me.

Tension built as I lined up with my friends and the 60 runners racing who looked just as nervous as I was.  As the horn blasted, everyone took off with me as every single person there wanted to get a medal.

Right through the race I was nervous of the boy right behind me.  Just a quarter of the way through the second lap he charged ahead of me but I carefully paced myself and ran close behind him.

In the last 500m, I just managed to push ahead through the river and make my final attempt to beat him; he had been neck and neck with me for the whole race.  As I just pulled away at the last minute I started to feel sick, but I still pushed on and beat him by 1 metre!

One of my friends didn’t even finish because he got kicked in the legs by someone’s spikes!  His legs got cut all over and he couldn’t run very well.

I came home with a smile on my face since this was one of the hardest races I have done and I came 3rd place!
