Need answers to questions about the science of vaccination?

The Australian Academy of Science has launched a new guide about the science of immunisation to help counter misinformation and uncertainty surrounding vaccines for COVID-19 and other diseases.

The National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS),  Director Professor Kristine Macartney and Associate Director Dr Frank Beard contributed to this guide, which answers common questions, including:

► What is immunisation?
► What is in a vaccine?
► Who benefits from vaccines?
► Are vaccines safe?
► What does the future hold for vaccination?

Syphilis rates on the rise for women in Melbourne

Health care providers are urged to encourage all their clients to CATCH UP and KEEP UP on the health checks they may have missed or put off since the beginning of the COVID-19 global pandemic.

As reported recently, there has been a 220 per cent spike in syphilis infections in women residing in Melbourne.

The Multicultural Health & Support Service (MHSS), a program of the Centre for Culture, Ethnicity & Health (CEH), is delivering a social media awareness campaign urging culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities to catch up and keep up with their health checks, especially around testing for blood borne viruses (BBVs) and sexually transmissible infections (STIs).

To download the MHSS campaign resources visit https://www.ceh.org.au/catch-up-care/

A GP commented after using the new View:

"this is one of the great benefits of My Health Record. I can see all the immunisation information without having to go through time-consuming logins for separate systems."

Checking immunisation history is now easier

The new Immunisation View in My Health Record now makes it easier to view a patient's immunisation history directly from your clinical software. The new view consolidates information from the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) as well as any immunisation events recorded in Shared Health Summaries and Event Summaries. It shows vaccination status for COVID-19 , childhood vaccines  and any related due, overdue and upcoming doses, as well as records for other immunisations that your patients may have received. You can also view any additional information from the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR), such as any recorded medical contraindications.

Contact our Digital Health team at: digitalhealth@semphn.org.au  or 03 8514 4460 if you would like to Register for My Health Record or  have any questions regarding the Immunisation View  or any other digital health queries.

Join our masterclass for Long-Acting Injectable Buprenorphine (LAIB)

Long-acting Injectable Buprenorphine (LAIB) is a formulation of buprenorphine pharmacotherapy that has the promise to be a true game-changer in the area of Medication-Assisted Treatment of Opioid Dependence.

The proven safety record of buprenorphine, combined with a weekly-to-monthly dosing schedule, provide very good reasons for both patients and prescribing clinicians to engage with this new treatment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Compare and contrast the effectiveness of LAIB to sublingual buprenorphine and oral methadone in a harm minimisation setting
  • Outline the indications for treatment, as well as patient-centred factors that would make them less suited for treatment with LAIB
  • Describe the legal and logistic considerations for LAIB therapy including examples of how these are practically addressed

  • Demonstrate best practice administration of both Buvidal and Sublocade formulations of LAIB.
