Last week, we were delighted that the Minister for Health and Aged Care, Hon. Mark Butler MP, and the Assistant Minister for Indigenous Health, Senator the Hon. Malarndirri McCarthy, announced $6 million in funding for new diabetes and cardiovascular disease research projects through our Targeted Translation Research Accelerator (TTRA) program. The funding is supporting
six projects in the Northern Territory, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria that address the unmet health and medical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in rural, remote, regional and urban centres. The projects all prioritise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership, embed community engagement and privilege First Nations ways of knowing, being and doing, and will deliver benefits for people living with diabetes and/or cardiovascular disease. In designing and delivering this funding, First Nations voices were centred and elevated at every stage of the process; from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led priority setting to co-design and deployment of the funding opportunity. Our TTRA team has been outstanding in delivering this initiative and I’d like to thank Lauren, Mana and Erin for their hard work and
commitment. And we couldn’t have done it without partnering with the Lowitja Institute, Australia’s National Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research, who will lead support for the successful projects along with the Australian Centre for Health Services Innovation, and support from the other TTRA partners. We are also continuing to support Australian health and medical innovators to take their medical products beyond our shores to international markets. The Australian delegation we led with our chair Hon. Jaala Pulford is just back from The Medtech Conference in Anaheim, the world’s largest medical technology event. The group of 20 companies were definitely making the most of the opportunities we provided in Los Angeles, which is the second biggest healthcare market in the US with an advanced medtech cluster. We connected the delegation with BioScience LA, ScaleHealth, Edwards Lifesciences, BiVACOR Inc and Stryker. And to make it all happen, it was great to partner with Austrade, Global Victoria, Trade and Investment Queensland, Invest and Trade WA and supporters –
ANDHealth, BridgeTech Program, Medical Technology Association of Australia and Pathology Technology Australia. It was also great to see OncoRes Medical MD and CEO Dr Katharine Giles and Jaala in the spotlight at the Innovation Pavilion in Anaheim. They highlighted the benefits of doing business with Australia’s growing medtech sector, our capabilities as a go-to destination for medtech clinical trials and strong government support including the R&D Tax incentive program and the new National Reconstruction Fund with $1.5 billion earmarked for medical manufacturing! Team Australia at its best. Talking about the best, if you want to know more about Australia’s medical device innovation pipepline, check out our double podcast episode featuring some of the promising medical devices of tomorrow which we’ve funded through our BioMedTech Horizons program. You can also check them out in a new Impact report which shares the innovation journeys of the companies funded through BMTH. In other international efforts, MTPConnect supported the Australian Pavilion at BioJapan in Yokohama as part of the Australian delegation attending the event which attracted 15,000 visitors from 26 countries. We were also pleased to support ANDHealth’s delegation of digital health companies to the HLTH conference. At home, our Adelaide Intermediary Program welcomed more than 25 South Australian CEOs and industry leaders to discuss and celebrate the contribution of the healthtech sector to SA’s economy. We were delighted to host special guests
including the Deputy Premier, Hon Dr Susan Close, and Central Adelaide/ZEN Energy Chair, Raymond Spencer. And earlier this week, we brought together for the first time the 11 promising medtech projects we are funding through the Clinical Translation and Commercialisation Medtech program at the inaugural CTCM Symposium in Sydney, which was supported by involvement from our program partners including MDPP, Cicada Innovations and MTAA. The event was designed as a satellite meeting adjacent to the MTAA’s MedTech Conference which
kicked off yesterday in Sydney. Coming up in November, we are celebrating SA’s Health and Medical Innovation Achievements in 2023 at MTPConnect SA’s exclusive event, APPLAUSE23. Innovators, entrepreneurs, leaders, researchers, and changemakers are invited to be part of the largest celebration of SA’s Health and Medical Innovations ecosystem on 23 November 2023. Limited Ticket Release has just dropped so book now! Our team at the WA Life Sciences Innovation Hub is inviting the WA health and medical life sciences community to an end-of-year Spotlight event to celebrate the achievements of the sector in 2023. Join the celebrations on 28 November 2023 and register. And we are getting behind World Antimicrobial Awareness Week through some activities with AAMRNet, a multi-stakeholder expert group we established that is committed to combating the
urgent global threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We are taking part in BioMelbourne Network’s BioForum: ‘New Frontiers: Rethinking Antimicrobial Resistance’ and my AAMRNet co-chair Andrew Bowskill will be taking part in that Melbourne event, so come along to hear more about the rise of drug-resistant infections and what can be done about this urgent threat to our health security. For companies who are involved and ready to conquer the world of medical device registration in Australia, join REDI for an exclusive Bootcamp with TGA experts designed to empower medical device companies looking to navigate the regulatory landscape with confidence. We've organised events in Adelaide and Perth in November and Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in December and hope you can join us.
