Permaculture is an imaginative design system for managing the natural resources which support health and well-being, as easily and sustainably as possible. A key concept of permaculture is viewing ourselves as producers instead of consumers. A SURPRISING BYPRODUCTA surprising byproduct of the coronavirus crisis is the increase in our producing things—food, entertainment, hair care—that we typically would have acquired from others. We’re seeing stories in our news feeds about baking the world’s easiest breads, home brewing beer, and backyard bird watching. We hope the results of our efforts will be favorable. Regardless, we are experiencing the sense of fulfillment that comes from creating with our own hands and, in many cases, how good it feels when we take better care of ourselves. HEALTH IS ALSO SOMETHING WE PRODUCEThough we don’t think of it this way, our health is also something we produce. Ideally we would produce our own high health—a state of high personal capacity, overall well-being, and resistance to common illness. Like home brewing, this requires knowledge, a little effort, and time. And like home brewing, this is something anyone can do. Options for producing high health and resistance to illness go well beyond hand washing, and the benefits go well beyond illness avoidance. Even small efforts, applied steadily, pay off.
