Thank-You to Local Book Club: Book Club Set Donation
Thanks to the generous donation by a local community book club, the Library graciously accepted a new book club set, What Strange Paradise, autographed by author Omar El Akkad.

Omar El Akkad is a Canadian journalist and author. He is also a finalist for the 2021 Scotiabank Giller Prize Shortlist. The winner for this prize will be announced on Monday, November 8.

There are two photographs. The first photo features two community book club members giving Library CEO Steven Kraft the book club set of What Strange Paradise by Omar El Akkad - autographed by the author. The second photo showcases three stacks of the book, What Strange Paradise by Omar El Akkad on a table. One is open to the title page to showcase the message to the Guelph Public Library and autograph by the author.

Dyslexia Friendly Resources Added to Library’s Collection
The Guelph Public Library is thrilled to have been awarded a $500 mini-grant from International Dyslexia Association (IDA) Ontario to purchase resources such as decodable books and books about dyslexia for our children’s collection.

“Decodable books are a wonderful way to support any child with dyslexia, or new readers, by helping to easily sound out words with their recognizable letters and patterns,” shares Ben Robinson, Supervisor of Westminster Square Branch.

Decodable readers focus on words comprised of specific letter-sounds. By emphasizing morphological patterns and the alphabetic code, decodable readers build vocabulary and empower children to read without guessing. These new dyslexic friendly resources will be located in all library locations shortly. Look for the red decodable stickers on the book spines or search the library’s catalogue for “dyslexia friendly”.

The Guelph Public Library is thankful for the support from IDA Ontario and looks forward to helping our community thrive together by supporting and empowering everyone’s reading needs.
