We devoted the first ten years to removing excess iron, neutralizing magnesium, and making the water alkaline. Although each intervention offered improvement, the “conditioned” water continued to damage the water heater, dishwasher, and other appliances and fixtures that used this water to operate. After much effort and expense, we reviewed a slew of water test results and successfully implemented an integrated approach that resolved the issues and delivered clear, good-tasting water. At this point, we realized that while we had been lavishing attention on the parts of the water-supply system, we had given little notice to how they fit and work together to create a whole, smooth-functioning process. In other words, we fed the parts with attention but starved the system as a whole. WE APPROACH MANY THINGS IN LIFE THIS WAYIt is not unusual for us to approach many things in life this way. For example, in an online search for “wellness,” the majority of topics found typically pertain only to physical aspects of health, like diet and fitness. Equally important non-physical aspects in the mental, emotional, and life direction dimensions of wellness are missing from the search results. This mode of focusing on certain parts is so ingrained that we have even lost awareness that we are ignoring the whole. Yet, as we learned though our water improvement experience, it is not possible to create a well-functioning whole by singling out the parts. ACHIEVING HIGH WELL-BEING REQUIRES FOCUS ON DETAIL AND THE WHOLE“We need both to focus on detail and yet see the whole,” notes psychiatrist Iain McGilchrist, researcher on the subject of the divided brain. Most efforts to improve our health and well-being fall short of our expectations as a result of focusing on parts like diet and fitness. This stems from a 300 year-old way of thinking that views the body as a machine rather than a living system with the ability to self-regulate, self-regenerate, and self-renew. Knowledge exists as to how to accomplish this integration of parts with the whole to achieve high health and well-being. Each of us has the capacity to do this, but many of us don’t know how or believe that it’s possible. Not only is it possible; it’s essential. Attaining and maintaining high capacity and high health provides immense benefits. It makes it possible to pursue what matters most to us in life.
