COVID-19 Tourism Workforce Impact Survey Results Tourism HR Canada has released preliminary findings in their Impact Report. Survey responses indicate only a fraction of tourism businesses are operating at full capacity. Many remain closed and intend to remain closed this summer. Those that have reopened or expanded operations are hiring back former staff, but employment is expected to remain well below the levels seen in 2019. Download Report for full results.

The tourism sector added 190,000 jobs from June to July. This represented 65.1% of all the jobs that were created. Jobs were lost (10,100) in the transportation industry group, but added in all other tourism industry groups. Accommodation – 10,300
Food and beverage services – 110,200
Recreation and Entertainment – 74,600
Travel Services – 5,000 363,900 jobs short of February numbers
Despite three months of increases, at the height of the summer season there were 557,200 fewer people employed in tourism than there were in July 2019. Slight improvement from June when there were 668,300 fewer people employed compared to June 2019. in July employment in the tourism sector was only 75% of what it was a year prior.
The tourism unemployment rate has dropped from 25.0% to 18.7%. For comparison, the overall seasonally un-adjusted unemployment rate is 11.2% (down from 11.9%). Travel services and accommodation have the highest unemployment rates at 27.2% and 25.7% respectively.
